I have a girl shipoo she was born the first of march and I got her the end of april, she is great and very smart but she nips at me and growls sometimes she seems alittle bit mean! is there anything I can do ? I am new to this web site I hope Im doing this right! Crying or Very sad

Janie, it's normal for puppies to growl and nip when they play. That's how they learn the hunting skills they'd use if they were going to have to provide for themselves as adults. And it's fun. It's also normal for adult dogs to growl and mouth each other when they play. That does NOT mean that it's ok for her to nip or bite you, even in play.

Your puppy may have been a bit too young when you got her for her to have learned to inhibit her biting behavior from her mother and siblings. I've found that pups will have a better understanding of how to play well with others if they stay with their litter mates until they are 10-12 weeks old.

But we can't go back in time, so now it's up to you to teach her what is acceptable play, and what is not. If she nips at you, yell OUCH and push her away. Ignore her attempts to continue playing for a few minutes. "If you can't play nice, I won't play with you at all." This is what her littermates would have done if she got too rowdy.

Growling during play is also normal, and it doesn't mean anything if it's a play growl. Try to observe her facial expressions and body language when she's growling. Is her face 'happy' or does she look angry? Is she pulling her lips back and exposing her teeth, with her ears back, eyes narrowed, and her body rigid? That's a no no. She's threatening you. If her body is relaxed, with a happy expression on her face, that's just play. Especially if a toy is involved. Puppies will bite, growl and shake a toy to "kill" it.

Now, if she's nipping at you over things that aren't play, like when it's time to be brushed, that absolutely must not be allowed. And rather than try to explain how to discipline her, I'd suggest you get her into a puppy kindergarten class or contact an obedience trainer for some lessons on how to raise a puppy you can live with. They can observe her body language and sort out her problems much more easily than trying to guess at what's going on when we can't see what she's doing.

Thanks for the info, my puppie is very mean, she has now bite my 9 year old daughter and drew blood, my daughter was trying to take the plug from the bath tub out of her mouth and she drew back and bit her hand I then tried and she bit me too!!! I am taking her to class TODAY!!! its really sad becuz we love her very much and she is a good puppie if she gets her way. Thanks again, Crying or Very sad
