any goldfish/pond experts here?

OK, I'm trying to work out a Mother's Day gift for my mom...

She has a 100 gall outdoor pond with 5 4-5" goldfish already in there... as far as I can tell they're standard run of the mill goldfish, not even of the "fancy" variety. Sorry I don't know more...

Is there room to purchase her an additional goldfish, perhaps a black moor? Any experts? Also, will goldfish eat mosquito fish?

sorry, i cant help you on the spacing issue, but i can help you on the mosquito fish issue. if the mosquito fish can fit in the gold fishes mouth it will, no questions asked eat it. gold fish are very stupid fish, they will eat anything you feed them. i accidently broke a piece of a rubber hockey puck into my 5g feeder tank and the feeders were trying to eat it. so the answer is yes if the fish is small enough.

Personally, I wouldn't even have that many goldfish in a 100 gallon pond (unless you treat it like an aquarium and do weekly water changes) so I definitely wouldn't recommend adding more. I like to allot at least 50 gallons per fancy goldfish and 75 - 100 per common/comet.

Probably a better gift would be one or two nice plants. Do you know what plant region you live in?

Hiya, as T-Chelle says, you may well be pushing it for room as goldfish can grow upto 18" each.

A black more would not be suitable for a pond, as it is a fancy goldfish and is a slow and awqward swimmer. It isnt really built for winter temps in a pond bellow room temp.

Is your mums pond preformed? or linered?

If it is preformed, (already maded in a particular shape, just dig the whole a nd put it in) then it is likely to have ledges. you could get your mum some lovly varieties of marginal plants. these are plants that sit out side the pond, or in shallow water ledges (hence marginal). Or theres water lillies. there more expensive but they do look great when they come up.
Perhaps a water feature or something?
