Hi all,

My name is Beth and I live in PA. I have lurked here for a week or so and finally registered. Along with a bunch of other animals, I just got a pony about a month ago. We dont' know a lot about him, he came from an auction. He has an awesome temperament, my kids have fallen inlove with him and he is a great pony for them since it is their first. We dont' even know what kind he is. (He was sold by a dealer instead of the previous owners at an auction and he had no clue about him)

Here is a picture. I think he is a Shetland. Anyone else have any guesses as to what kind he could be?

TIA

Welsh Shetland cross perhaps???

He looks strikingly like my old Welsh man...DANG...he's shorter but could be the same dang horse... Here he is with my Arab Gelding... Might be full Welsh rather than shetland...looks an awefull lot like a welsh to me!

That coat also suggests Welsh... Wales get's pretty dang cold so they have this AMAZING coat in the winter... I'm going to go out on a limb and really guess that this is a Welsh type A perhaps??? Have you read up about Welsh ponies as well as Shetlands??? REally looks welsh...

Sams any ideas?

looks a lot like an oversized mini I trained...that's be my guess...Is it the camera angle, or all the hair that makes his head look pretty small in comparison to his body? Maybe he is a welsh cross or a shetland cross...i could see some shetland in there...the head looks like a mini to me though..

Thanks for you ideas. I am going to go look up Welsh's as soon as I log off line. As far as his head, yes, it is small compared to his body size. If he is a large miniature, is there anything I need to do different as opposed to if he is a pony? (He is our first pony, so forgive me if that is a stupid question LOL But I really want to keep this guy happy and healthy me and my kids just LOVE him Very Happy )

Here is another picture of him from the side, it gives you a better idea of his head size. (My nephew riding him and my DH in the background)

Also, He really should have a buddy right? LOL I am trying to talk my DH into a horse for me to ride and he isnt' quite convinced.

Nope, he's just a big mini!

He should be ok by himself as long ashe has lots of attention. But a horse pal would be good too.

Careful with the kids on him. THeir backs are only rated for 95lbs MAX!!!

I agree- I wouldn't put a kid that weighs over about 60 lbs on him. The boy in the picture looks too heavy for him.

I also agree..He looks to heavy for that little guy!Let him grow up a little bit and maybe he'll be able to ride him.
