My own general rule for stocking large cichlids is at least:

20 gallons for small cichlids (around 6" - cons, firemouths, etc)
30 - 40 gallons for medium sized cichlids (around 8" - JD's, acaras, severums, etc)
50 - 75 large cichlids (12" - 14" - oscars, GT's, RD's, etc)
75 - 100 gallons for really large cichlids (14" - 18" - Jags, etc)
