Hey everyone.. well I was at the pet store yesterday and saw the little freshwater frogs swimming up and down.. geeze I knew I had to get some when I get my tank going hehe.. so I have a 16 gallon tank.. and I havnt thought about what I am going to put in it yet.. my cycleing process must be done soon its been over a month now..
but anyways.. how big do these little guys get?? Is it possible to keep a couple of them in a tank as small as I have?? and also do they just eat normal fish food??

are you talking about the dwarf african frogs? if so, you tank size would be plenty for a few of them. normally, a few gallonjs would be good enough for one but with a 16 you could fit a few in there.

Ok now what I dont understand when everyone is talking about stocking tanks.. is you say that I shoudl be able to have a couple of them... ok cool.. but then youll say I can fit a few of another kinda fish in there.. do you mean only a couple because they get territorial or just basic tank size?? WIth the 1 inch per gallon rule.. I should be able to get about 16 1" fish correct? Is this a good rule to go by?

no, that rule is a horrible one. take oscars for example, a 12" oscar could not fit into a 12 gallon tank. some of the factors we use to come up with a minimum requirement is the temperment of the fish, the adult size of the fish, and the swimming habits. if you have questions on certain fish, just post on this forum and we will be glad to tell you a good tank size and help as much as we can. I would disagree with the venerable mr. lemonade that 1"-1 fish rule is horrible. It's just not hard an fast. For virtually all small, community fish the rule stands. As he obviously pointed out, it doesn't stand for larger fish (and their concurrant girth). It's important to consider their relative dimensions (how wide/long the tank is with respect to their bodies) and how much waste they produce.

African Dwarf Froggs, of which I have a several in my 55 gal. should be spaced out about 1 frog per two inches, since they rarely exceed 1" on their own. By that rational you could fit 8 in a 16 gallon, though to be on the safe side, you'd be better off at about 6 of them.
