wow, yesterday at a fish store i saw a 24" silver arowanna in a tank about 32" long. i felt so bad for the poor fish. it could arely move, so it just sat there and in its tank was an assortment of cichlids. i wish animal control could also help fish like this one needed.

Yup, it stinks that fish aren't covered under animal cruelty laws. That being said, most LFS tanks are overstocked, however, the fish aren't meant to be there long term so they can generally get away with it w/o too many of the problems that are normally associated with overstocking.

I still believe that any fish that gets over 8" should be special order only and you have to prove you are capable of properly housing the fish. And I think fish should be more expensive. If goldfish cost $20, would people be so quick to throw them in an unfiltered 1/2 gallon bowl?

Yeah I wish animal control could get in there too!

My nearest LFS always has sick fish. Once I went in and they had 3 tanks full of swordtails and all of them had ick. There was also a tank of guppies with dead ones floating on the top of the tank and some that had sunk to the bottom (needless to say I don't buy fish from them anymore).

I also wish that most LFS's would train there staff better. I went to my LFS the other day and a girl went in to buy some fish for her new 20 gallon tank ( I overheard them talking) and an employee tried to sell her 3 young Oscars and said that they wouldn't get much bigger then they already were! I wasn't quick enough though and a guy came up to them and started screaming at the employee about how his knowledge of fish s**k and that one Oscar needs atleast 55 gallons. Then he went on to tell the girl about a better LFS that would help her pick the right fish for her tank!
