I was watching Miami Animal Police on Animal Planet last night and one ACO was enroute to pickup a pitbull and she was saying how they are more danergerous and most dogs b/c they could lock their jaws. Now I have heard this is not true. It kinds makes me mad cause people wonder where this negativity toward pitts come from. Here we have someone on Animal Planet an ACO at that telling millions of people that pitts can lock their jaws. Not only will this discourge people from liking them but also hype up the people who want to fight them into doing it. Just wondering if this statement was incorrect on her part. Since I have heard both but tend to believe this is not possible. Thanks for any input!

The jaws of an APBT have the same anatomy as any other dog, no "locking mechanism".

This just ticks me off!! This is just another ploy by the media to discredit the P.B. They will stop at nothing to sensationalize a story related to a P.B. to make them out like some kind of demon dog from hell. That's all they are trying to do by telling people some stupid myths and fables. P.B. do NOT have locking jaws. This is such an idiotic statement coming from someone in "Law Enforcement" that suppossibly has the training to serve and protect. I don't get Animal Planet, but I'm going to email them or anyone who gives a crap, and tell them what kind of damage they are doing by filling people's minds with such fallacy. As ar as I'm concerned, Animal Planet is a "Media Whore" who exploits any animals for a profit.

I was pretty upset about the comment and also in the same episode another ACO was at a house with some "illegal pits" (they are outlawed in Miami-Dade county) and he was going on about how unpredictable they are. This from the same man who got bit not once but twice by a Rott, the same dog. But never once did he have a negative comment about this dog. I watch animal plannet alot it does have some really good informative shows on it but this is the first time I have been unhappy with one of their shows. I thought about writting or something to let them know what a negative impact this would have on people.

I watch Animal Cops every chance I get. I too have seen the episode where the agent, whose name is Charlie, was bitten by a Rott w/an obviously aggressive nature. At that point, the agent could have made the decision to put the dog down. He did not. Later Charlie went to visit the same Rott at a foster home. The dog, for whatever reason, bit him again. At that point, Charlie could have made the decision to put the dog down. He did not, nor did he EVER say anything negative about the dog. HOWEVER, on a recent episode (showed 04/08/04) this same idiot makes erradic and faulty comments on "pit bulls." He's the one that made the comment about how Pit Bulls have a tendency to just "snap out of the blue". A P.B never would have stood a chance under any circumstances and in that area you're fined $500 for even owning a P.B & then you must either relocate the dog or it will be euthanized. How are u going to be bitten twice by an aggressive Rott (as they tend to be a "people-aggressive" breed anyway) and not have word one to say about it, then turn around and say P.B's are this & that when the truth is that people-aggresiveness is a RARITY in the breed? These shows are watched by millions of ignorant people who are educated by their televisions. I believe that if you are going to speak as an expert you should atleast know W.T.F you're talking about. I'm disgusted by the negativity P.B's receive. It's true some P.B's have been involved in brutal attacks & confrontative situations. Probably half of these cases may have actually involved real A.P.B.T's. However no one will ever know this if they let the television speak their gospel. I guess it just really pisses me off because this is the type of bullshit that I'm going to have to counteract everytime I tell someone I'm getting a P.B, and when I actually walk him down the street. Sorry to rattle on.

The only show like that that I watch on AP is Animal Presinct in NYC... on almost EVERY episode they take abused and neglected APBT's and usually a couple other breeds. It's pretty normal to see them rehabilitate the abused APBT and adopt them out...they really only talk well of the breed on that show and don't really follow a bunch of stupid stereo types... I think even the fighting dogs get a chance in NYC... It's different there too because it's not just AC it's the cops that are working in conjunction with the humane society's no kill shelter... The other shows are different... Houston might be no kill and stuff... but NYC is the best one out there...it's the best show on AP that shows almost consistently that APBT's are good dogs and that they're not that different from any other breed except the ammount that they get exploited by unsavories...

Can't watch detroit and now...I WON'T even take a moment to check out the Miami one...people are rediculous...
