I wrote a few days ago that my dog was going to have to be put to sleep right away. Over the weekend she seemed much better and was acting a lot like she usually does except for the fluid on her belly. We took her back to the vet today to see if they could do something else for her belly. They ended up giving her a little sedation and taking some of it off, they got a half a liter of fluid out! Vet said she still probably has that much or more in there but thats all he could get out now. He also gave her a shot of Lasics and some pills twice a day which should take off more.
The worst part is that I think she is mad at me. Since the vet said she would be going to the bathroom a lot from getting the shot and taking the pill. When we first picked her up it was just coming out and she couldn't help it. Well, we went to the pet store and bought a doggie diaper, sounds crazy huh? You are supposed to put sanitary napkins in them which I did and put it on her. She of course hated it to begin with and then I left the room and I heard her crying I ran in there and she had tried to poop and with this diaper on she couldn't because it was pushing against her.
I'm sorry for rambling I've been crying for an hour because I know it hurt her and I feel responsible and she won't even look at me. Again I'm sorry this is so long just needed a another dog lover to listen. The good news is that as long as shes happy and seems to be feeling good we won't have to put her to sleep right now. We'll know when its time to let go. |

| Someone else here had the smae sort of problem, with pee and don't know about poo. Her dog had to wear the diapers, I can't think of who it was, but the dogs name was Sadie and it was a GSD if I remember right so hopefully she will see this and be able to help you out with tips on diaper usage. |

| The reason shes wearing diapers right now is because after draining all the fluid they could get off of her stomach there was still a lot left to try to get rid of. This isn't something shes going to have to wear very long. Just until the rest of the fluid drains off. This makes her pee more often than she normally does and shes not always able to hold it right now. I guess it just so happened that she had to poo at a bad time. lol The urine has nowhere to go except the floor so we are trying to prevent that but I don't think I'm going to put it that stupid 18.00 diaper back on her. |

I have the Sadie mentioned....Sadie had to take Lasik and prednisone for fluids inside her too. WHAT A MESS!!!! But you're right once it's gone things are pretty good. Sadie had to take a pred every other week now and will leak a little bit during that day but otherwise she does fine.
Diaper issue - if you can find some Bitch Britches those work best with regular baby diapers. I buy Sadie the large WalMart brand and cut a hole in the backside for her tail. The Bitch Britches have a hole in them and they help to hold the diaper on. I found neither sanitary napkins or people incontinence pads to be very good for her. She lost up to 2 gallons of fluid and it took about 2 weeks, with the fluid amount tapering off - first week was the worse. I also had to shave her back legs to help keep the urine burn down. I found Nature's Miracle for fur to be helpful on the smell (she got bathed daily during this).
Since we've been there done that if you want anymore help/support just PM me. You're gonna feel really down for a few days. Really you feel like you're fighting a losing battle - BUT IT DOES GET BETTER!!!! I took a week's vacation to stay home with Sadie and keep the floor clean. But it did get better.
Try to use baby diapers though - they are made to hold more volume of fluid. And your dog will be more used to the diapers as time goes one.
Please PM I can help dry your tears I shed my share during my week of this too |

| Fortunantly my vet told me today the diaper had nothing to do with the problem, so it wasn't my fault after all. Vet said she is probably allergic to the penicillian he gave her yesterday. She has had bloody diarrhea all day, I know thats gross, I'm sorry. Its seems to have stopped but I have 2 different kinds of medicine I'm supposed to give to her twice a day and I can't get her to eat or drink anything to get them down her. I know she feels really bad she has layed around all day. I just hope she feels better tomorrow maybe I can at least get her to take her medicine. |

what is causing the fluid buildup?
You could always just pill her without food |
