I know that people should be trying to breed for conformation but blue, red, white colourations are certainly most of the colours people breed in Australia and they don't strive to breed those colours as far as I know. I see them everywhere. I agree with you on the blue merle though. They don't seem right.

A lot of times, through line breeding, a breeder may consistantly produce the same color dogs (always black, always red, etc). This doesn't mean they aren't responsible breeders. Irresponsible breeders are the ones who breed for the color that is in highest demand (like the "rare" merle) with no regard for health, temperament, or conformation/ability. Below is a link to a UKC forum thread. Notice that the UKC employee says that merle APBTs are not accepted for registration.
