I had my parakeets for about a year now and had clean their cage only once. Is this ok, or should I clean them more often? I would like to keep these parakeet as long as i can.

I would clean it once a week... the paper on the bottom and then dust the actaual cage when needed. Once a year is just not enough... they will get sick.

Hi.....I think cage cleaning is pretty important...birds can get bacterial infections when subjected to feces (and yes, they WILL eat their own) and old food left in the cage and dirty water containers. My food and water dishes get cleaned every single day. Some people clean their cage once a week....I empty and wipe down my birds cage everyday...I use a very MILD bleach/soap solution...If you keep a paper...newspaper is fine as newspaper ink is non-toxic as long as it's the plain black and white stuff...no shiny magazine print....As I started to say...if you keep a paper in the bottom and you change out the paper everyday you shouldn't have much mess to wipe up if at all...and it will just get to be part of your 'daily routine'...much easier if you do it on a daily basis and much safer for your birds. You don't want your bird to develope a bacterial infection as they will go downhill really quickly. Birds mask/hide/fake symptoms of illness until it is nearly too late. They fake being well until they can't anymore as birds in the wild that are ill or weak are the first preyed upon...so if you notice watery droppings, your bird is listless or fluffed...you need to get it to an avian vet ASAP.
I don't know that everyone cleans their cage everyday as I do...but I would say at LEAST once a week. A year is ummm a bit excessive. LOL

I change my cage papers every week, and then take all the perches and toys out and put them in hot water with mild soap for awhile. I also wipe the plastic 'towers' with a mild vinigar soulution to keep them clean. Cage hygene is very important and poor cage hygene can lead to a sick bird..

Yes, I agree pretty much with everyone when they say that you are supposed to change your cage once a week or if it gets dirty sooner clean it right then and there. I is very important for the birds health to clean its cage!
