Hey Everyone.

Guess what, gonna borrow my works camera at lunch today and post some pics of my pooch milo. Now they will be updated.

Maybe someone can help me out and explain something to me. I am not sure what it could be??? Maybe Wheezing? It has happened a few times now. I have noticed that Milo will make a "Wheezing" kind of sound. Its really hard to explain. The sound makes you think that he is choking!!! Crying or Very sad It has happened about 3 times now that i know about. Once i gave him a rawhide bone and about 20 minutes later he started to make the sound. the second time was at around 2 in the morning, He was sleeping in his cage and started to make the noise. The third time was this morning. We had woken up, i brought him outside to go do his thing, and we went up stairs to wake up my cousins who had to get ready for camp. Milo likes to wake them up. And then he just started to make the sound. This morning i was on the floor when he did it so i grabbed him and just started to hold him. I felt his ribs. Its really hard to explain, Its just a weird sound that he makes (mix from wheezing to coughing) and he extends his body and thats when i felt his ribs. Anyone have any questions???? I havn't made an appointment with the vet yet, but i think that should be on my to do list. I just wanted to find out if anyone knew what it could have been. Maybe Hairball?????? i have no clue!

Is it happening all within a short period or over the months. This may be a reverse sneeze as I've heard people call it and or something to do with the trachea. The trachea can partially callapse or completely. Do you use a harness when she goes for walks, if not you should to avoid any extra pressure on the throat. My poo does this noise also. But not often enough to worry about it. She did do it this morning. But its been awhile since she has done it before this. Maybe a visit to the vet will be helpful. It can be done on the next visit if you have one coming up in the next month or two. But if she's doing many times in a day bring her in.

puttin 510: I have no clue what it could be. Mile has done it 3 times probably in like 2 months. I'm not sure, i am gonna make an appointment with the vet. I did call the vet to see what they would say and they just told me to keep an eye on him.

Poo Girl: Thanks so much for your reply.

I just want to make sure that everything is healthy for milo, just like anyone would do with their companions.

Just my two cents:

From what you described, Milo, I would guess that it is either "Reverse Sneezing" or temporary stints where the trachea is collapsing. On a previous thread from a little while back, someone brought up a similar issue, so I will copy and paste my responses from those since it covers both issues.

Reverse Sneezing:

Quote:
The only thing that leads me to believe that it is not reverse sneezing, technically termed "Paroxysmal respiration," is the fact that Prncess said it is a hacking type cough. I have heard a good number of dogs do this reverse sneezing, and when it is happening it sounds like the dog is snorting, quite loudly, (sometimes it may sound like a horn) rapidly several times in a row. While it is happening, most dogs will stand there with their necks extended out, legs bowed out usually, and appear as if their are having great difficulty breathing during the episode. Most of the time, the episode usually lasts only for about 10-20 sec., although for some dogs it can last for a few minutes. For people who have never heard or seen it happen, it is VERY scary, but nothing to worry about!

Treatment for when it happens:
If you don't do anything your dog will be just fine, so don't worry about if it happens when you are not there. But, if you are there when it happens, there are a few things you can do to to help stop it (it doesn't always work though, and that is when you just have to let nature take its course)

-like Malti mentioned, gently massage the throat (in my experience with other dogs, this usually works best)

-lightly blow in the dog's nose

-or gently close off his/her nostrils for a second or two

**And be sure to stay calm during the episode, you don't want your dog to start panicking because he sees you flipping out. Just talk to him in a very calm voice as if there was nothing wrong.

If this happens to your dog randomly a few times here and there, not too frequently, then there is nothing to worry about. In other words, medical treatment is not needed. When it becomes very frequent, and severe, is when your dog should be checked for any other problems besides just reverse sneezing!

I am not a professional, but this is what I have been taught. For the safety of the dog, I would definitely have him/her vet checked even if one suspects it is reverse sneezing. It's always better to be safe than sorry!!!

Alright, I am done preaching now!

Collapsed Trachea:

Quote:
Out of curiosity, has your vet checked your pup for a collapsing trachea? The symptoms you mentioned sound like some of those found in dogs with collapsing trachea problems. (Such symptoms sound like many problems found in dogs, as is usually the case with various symptoms and problems, I am just curious if she was checked for this particular problem.)

I hope you soon find out what the problem is!

Let us know what your vet has to say...hoping for the best! Very Happy

Okay, after reading my response above, I realized that the info I quoted regarding a collapsed trachea would be of no help since I didn't mention the symptoms. So, in case you are interested in reading a little more about collapsed tracheas, here are a few links:
