hi there,

i recently rescued a cat from a shelter and he has progressed in leaps and bounds. he is called george and is very loving and has the strongest personality i have seen in a cat.

the thing is when i arrived home from work last nite i noticed a swelling beneath his left eye, i have fealt this swelling and it doesnt seem to hurt him. i plan on taking him to the vet but would appreciate peoples opinions to help ease my mind. his behaviour is the same and he doesnt seem "ill" but obviously the lump must be something!! Crying or Very sad

Congrats on getting George! I love the name George! I've always associated George with big sweet grey kitties. In our previous duplex apt., our neighbor had a wonderful grey cat named George who loved to climb through his window onto the roof and visit us. Our neighbor across the street has a beautiful grey cat named George and he's got the sweetest disposition. I'm just a s**k for George cats! Do you have a pic you can post?

This article might help:
http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/dogdiseasesl/a/lipomas.htm

How big is the swelling and if it just appeared and it doesn't bother him then it might be a cyst or a lipoma. Is the swelling hard or soft? Let us know what the vet says. Personally I get cysts under my right eye. They come and go. I'm sure kitties get cysts too. The vet may do a biopsy or cyst aspiration on the area to rule out any diseases. Hopefully the swelling is just from George bumping into something and not anything serious. Let us know what the vet says.

When my kitten got stung by a scorpion just by his nose it swelled up pretty nicely. After a few minutes it didn't seem to "hurt" him when I touched it but it did stick around for about a week and a half.

Perhaps he got stung or bitten by something. Sad

Hi. Welcome to Auspet. Very Happy It could be a lot of things. Just be sure to take George to the vet a.s.a.p. as some eye problems (or near to the eye) can be serious if gone untreated. Let us know what the vet says.

hi there, thankyou all for your replies/ help. i took him to the vet last nite, it transpires that it is an abcess, when the vet checked his mouth there is a hole that looks a little septic. we think this is where the abcess has started and think he has been fighting and been bitten in the mouth by his rivel/ prey (i say prey cos george is a bit of a street fighting cat what with him being a former stray) the vet gave him an injection (george was most displeased with this) and some antibiotics. fingers crossed things will be ok, we just anticipate the thing "popping" soon!! Surprised

Yeah, it's only an abcess. It's a good thing you brought Goerge to the vet and put him on antibiotics. Infections that are not taken care of can lead to severe sepsis and death even in people.
