|
|
I just bought a little 1G aquarium at wallmart last night to use for my fry. I have two pregnant baloon Mollies and they should be having the fry any time now. It is just a little all inclusive kit that has an undergravel filter, an airpump and stone, a hood with a small light in it and one small plastic plant. I filled it up with water from the aquarium they are in currently and used the gravel from there as well. I am wondering if the tank will cycle quickly having done things this way? The other thing is would it be safe to put both baloon mollies in at the same time? Just until they have the fry? I know with small fish the rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon, but I couldn't afford the 2G and all I will have in it once the fry are born is them. The mollies don't like the floating breeder I used to use for the guppies I used to have, so I thought this would make it a little easier on them. |

Is it a 1.66 gallon from wal-mart? A friend of mine has this tank and it works out quite well for her. I would say put the mollies in at the last possible moment and then remove them when they are finished birthing. Although with two you risk having the mom that drops later eating the fry from the first mother. I would also think that the cycle would happen faster because you added the gravel as well as the water.
Good luck with your new babies!!! |

Thanks Tina! It's really a cute little tank for fry! I can't believe it was only $18! It's been going all day now and bubbling away! The white mollie is HUGE! Last time I missed out on her because her bum didn't get see through or if it did I was asleep and she went fast!!! The peach one is smaller but has become see through a week ago but not dark yet. I had her in the breeder and a bunch of balls that looked like yolks came out and nothing else! Then her shape went back to normal (from squarish to round again). So I don't know how much longer it will be it feels like it's been forever! It has been several weeks though. The little tank didn't come with a heater but it's quite warm in the apartment. The light gives off a little heat, and I put a thermometer in it and the temp stayed the same for now anyway 82- a lilttle high so I guess I'm being paranoid about not having a heater in it! L.O.L. I turned down the one in the large aquarium even though it was only set at 78-79. Do you think it all sounds O.K.? I am a very anxious mother to be (if you couldn't tell...L.O.L.)! It's been a long time since I have had fry! |

| I have had some balloon mollies for about 3 months. I was pretty sure they were pregnant when I got them but they haven't gotten any smaller and I haven't seen any babies. Is it possible for you to post some pictures on you balloon mollies pregnant so I can see if they look like mine. Thanks. |

I think I have the same tank. Is it sort of triangular shaped? And oddly enough, I originally bought mine because I need a place to put some african cichlid fry. The fry should be okay in it for a few weeks, but after that they'll need something bigger.

Yes Chelle, that's the one! L.O.L. Great deal wasn't it! I think you would pay that just for the airpump alone at many L.F.S.'s. Thanks for the time frame (few weeks). SweetpeasMama here is my website http://www.msnusers.com/ChrissysAquariumandToyDogPlace
I think all you do is click on the link and then click on the word pictures in the left hand column and then click on the individual pictures there are two of the pregnant balloon mollies. There is a photo album there too but the 2 pics are seperate. Let me know if after you see mine you think yours are too. |

| Ah, the one I was thinking of is a small hex tank. It too comes with undergravel filter, light, airstone, and air pump for about $18 at wal-mart. Good luck with your mollies! |

Actually it does have 5 sides. So it's probably the same one. Two of the sides are much shorter than the other three though, so that's why it's almost triangular. |

I actually use the air pump more than the tank. It's the perfect size for running my egg tumbler.

| heh, I got the same tank for my mollie fry, I took a gallon from the 55 & filled the little tank about a week before she popped... now the fry are sold (sail-fin lyre-tail black mollies, LFS bought em for 3 bucks a piece!) & the 1g is now a betta tank until the next batch! |
