Suicide!!!

I awoke this morning at 9:30 to see what I thought was a dog turd (bad Macy!) It was about two feet in front of the aquarium. As I bend over I realise that the "turd" has scales!!!AAAAHHHHH!!! Mad

At first I thought it was my betta who lives in a gallon bowl with no lid, but he was still in there! He has jumped out once before but that was long ago! My sick fish who still had velvet showing on him and was in the tank I was treating had comitted suicide! The lid was still shut so I don't know how he got out! The lid covers the front and the hood covers the back almost all the way! I quickly put him in the tank to see if he would revive but no such luck! I guess if somebody had to die at least he was already sick. Maybe he wouldn't have gotten better and it is saving grace that he won't continue to infect the others who have won the battle with velvet! Farwell Mr. Molliee! You will be missed! His wife died giving birth not too long ago. He chased the baloons a bit but it wasn't the same! Now they are together in fishy heaven! Crying or Very sad

omgosh im so sorry! my tigerbarb did that. i had him in a bucket to clean the tank cause he likes to attack the cleaning things that i used. i came back into my room he was about a foot infrount of the tank. i was crying. and i was only 10 and i still remember it. Crying or Very sad

it was so sad. my fish was about a year and a half!

I have kept fish for over 10 years and I have only had a fish do it two other times. The first was in my first tank my rainbow shark jumped out while I was at work Crying or Very sad

! Then a year ago my betta (Wiggles) jumped out of his bowl but I saw him in time, thank goodness! I just don't understand how Mr. Mollie got out!!! Unless he jumped out a small openning in the back and wiggled across the carpet to the front of the tank?!? I would understand if it was one of the dwarf frogs, but not a mollie! Thanks for the moral support guys! Sad

Maybe this aternoon I'll treat myself to a new fishy to "fill the void" in my heart! Smile

I have to keep the lid on my oscar tank secured with velcro becaues my lutino oscar decided to jump one night. I heard the noise but at first dismissed it as the cats playing. After 10 mintues, curiosity got the better of me and in went to investigate and found her laying on the floor(she'd ended up flopping about 4 feet across the floor). Luckily all 4 cats where asleep. I threw her back in the tank and she was back to normal within 2 days. Had I not finally decided to check on the noise, she would have layed there all night and died.

The only other fish I've ever had jump (at least I think she jumped) was a female betta. She just disappeared w/o a trace in a 6 hour span, so my only guess is she jumped and a cat ate her. Sad

I had a goldfish that jumped out when I was at work, don't know how long she's been out but when I came back she's had this net of my long black hair wrapped all around her. So I guess she's been kicking for quite some time. She was badly badly bruised but I still put her back in the tank, and she lay there on the bottom clearly on her way out. I didn't want her to die out of water though, so just left her there. In the morning she started to swim a little and then a little more. She had some kind of ugly puff cover her recovering side, but that went away and she was completely healed. I think fish jump out when the conditions in the tank are really bad either due to the wrong chemical composition or due to other fish pestering them.

I had a goldfish jump out once when the males were driving her during the breeding season. I got her in time and she's still alive in a pond today.
I secured the lid properly after that Wink

I use this fibre based netted cloth to cover my tank , This really helps instead of a glass cover. Cause they solve the problem of fishes jumping out of tank and also helps in aireation. so that we can cover the entire tank.

I never thought of that! Do you get the netting at your L.F.S.? It hasen't been a huge problem for me as this is only my second fish to do this in over ten years, but two is too many!

I had a silver tip shark that jumped once. I had a big shark in my bug tank and bought another one, but he was too small to be in the large tank right away. So I put him in a 10 gallon for a few weeks until he grew more. The day I decided he was big enough to be in the large tank, I went down to my room with my net and everything and I saw something on the floor. I thought my dog had brought in a little plastic top or something, but when I bent down to pick it up I realized that it was my shark! I think I screamed... it really creeped me out. And I have no idea how he got out, the only opening was the one that the filter was in...

Thanks raghu_gg! I have not seen it in the L.F.S.'s around here yet. Maybe I'll find something at fabricland. I'm curious is your netting taught (sp?) like a screen window or door? Could I just sew elastic around the edge like those glad quick covers have? Silenced

I'm thinking it would have to be taught so that the fish can't jump and get stuck in the net outside of the aquarium. Thanks for sharing everyone.

It's good to know that I'm not the only person with suicidal fish, so I know I'm not a bad mommy! I definately don't think that poor water conditions were a factor (although that could have been a reason with the rainbow shark in Florida 10 years ago because it was my first real big aquarium and I let the L.F.S. test my water for me) this time because ever since I got my own test kit I check it bi-weekly and it's steady #'s A=0, Nitrites=0, ph=7.4, gh=13 (a little high but steady and the fish are used to it). iv never had a fish jump out, but i have watched them rub against sharp bits, hense why i took them out.

i had to replace the pebbles with sand coz orien my fancy goldfish kept choking on them, and we had to get him out, and stick a needle in his mouth and get it out.

he's survived this, and then did it again a few weeks later, so sand it was.

when i first had the tank, it had no lid, and no one jumpt out, i guess they knew that my 3 cats were saying, 'yes little fishy, jump in my mouth and ill save you!', but they werent that stupid!

I once had an aquarium with no lid for a short time until I had the cash to buy one. Luckily none of them decided to tour the apartment that time. I honestly am still floored that the Mollie was able to jump in the exact right spot where there is a small space at the H.O.B. filter and heater are!
