My friend called me when she got home from work tonight to tell me that Simba her 8 year old Australian Shep mix was not acting right and she was taking him to the emergency vet as her vet was closed. I offered to go with her. As soon as I got into the car I knew it was bad. Simba's breathing was very labored and fast. The last time I had seen breathing like that was in hospice the night my sister passed. I urged my friend to try to hurry but the traffic was very bad. When we got to the vet's they took Simba in on a gurney and took him into a room, after a few minutes they took him for x-rays. The Doctor came in and told us Smba had fluid around his heart, more then likely caused by a tumor on his heart, We needed to decide if they should tap the fluid to relieve the pressure around his heart to buy some time probably only a couple of weeks, or to euthanize him. we went outside to discuss the options and after many tears decided the most humane thing for Simba would be to let him go. We went in to give the vet our decision and they went to bring Simba back to allow us to say goodbye to him. My friend had said she could not be in the room when they administered the drugs and I had offered to stay with him. They brought Simba back into the room for final goodbyes and left the room. As we were saying goodbye to him he lifted up his majestic head, laid back down and with one more sigh was gone. No drugs, Simba did it his way. Goodbye Good Dog |

How incredibly sad! What's wonderful is that you and your friend were able to be there with him during his passing moments...so comforting to him!
I am so sorry to hear, my deepest condolences to both you and your friend for her loss! |

Oh man. I'm sorry, But at least he went his way, and didn't need "help".
I think that last look, he was probably telling you, Thanks, But I can do this myself. |

| Sam I think you are right on. I like to think that some how he sensed how hard this decision was for my friend and he knew she would be second guessing herself and wondering if she did the right thing. In some weird way he was saying I'll make this decision so you don't have to. |
