My husband I would like to get a puppy, but are not sure which breed to get.We are looking for a loving and protective dog. We live out in the country and want a dog that will guard and also be a good family dog. We have grandchildren ranging in age from 4 yrs to 13 yrs. that come to visit and also have 4 cats as well. My two girls have choc. labs, and my son has a golden retriever. We have had some break ins in the area, and really want a dog that will stand his ground. I have had german shephards years ago, but was thinking of a doberman. Any input would be appreciated. Question

Personally I think you should go with a rare breed myself. Something like A Boerboel or Cane Corso from working bloodlines. With the less popular breeds it seems you can have a better chance at getting the temperment and health you'd want rather than going to a more well known breed where you can possibly get a show dog who's a chicken or who fails in health.

Rottweilers can be good as well, although you really need to do your homework on the breeder.

If you want I can direct you to a VERY good breeder of healthy working Boerboels and some information about them.

Feel free to email me at slrobbins13@gmail.com

you should check with your homeowner's insurance company BEFORE choosing any breed of dog. You don't want to get one that your insurance company has listed as a banned breed.

Definately not a Lab if you want a watchdog. There's the old joke that a Lab would happily hold the flashlight for a burglar.

You might consider a Great Pyranese if you have the room. I understand that guarding their territory is in their genes.

Rottweilers are very good guard dogs and good family dogs, but they have a tendacy to have major hip problems as they get older..

LOL @ The lab comment .. Laughing Laughing

We have Bull terriers, and they are great with kids and very protective even though they get a bad name. Sad
But Each to there own
Very Happy
