fur changes in short haired cat

Hello, thanks for all the good info. I have a problem with my 5 year old short hair, Sugar. Sugar has recently developed a tremendous amount of white flakes all over her body. It looks like drandruff. On her back she has small lumps of matted fur. This is very new. I have been brushing her twice a day with a tremendous amount of fur coming out. Any thoughts? Does she need to see a vet? Several years ago, she had a very high fever and possible suffered a stroke. She is a 5 year old in a 20 year old body. She moves very slowly and not very friendly. Any advice?

and welcome. Your best bet is taking her to the vet. They can do blood tests and so forth to determine any problems that she might have. Did you change her food or has her personality changed? I'm not sure if she's generally not very friendly or if she's developed a new unfriendly personality. I wonder if her thyroid function is off:

Hi and welcome to Auspet. I agree about taking her to a vet. Also, what kind of food are you feeding her?Often if a skin disorder is diet related, Wellness cat food (always feed soft and hard food) will get their skin and fur healthy again within a week or two.
