Sad Question Hello All & Good Day! I just recently like a month ago bought a large basted bone for a pet store home for my shepard mix. He's taken it outside to play with and eat so it might get softened up by the rain etc. Today(6/13) I took it from him with the thought of filing down the sharp areas when I noticed little white jumping worms on the inside of the bone. Should I be worried that he may have ingested some of these what I think are maggots? Thank You for anyhelp you could be in this matter!

Likely his stomach acids killed the little creatures. I'd be worried about bacteria if the bone was pretty old...keep an eye for Diahrrhea (sp?) but otherwise I'm sure your pooch is fine...

EEEWWWWWW though.

I wouldn't be too concerned about him ingesting the maggots. They're just a little additional protien. On the other hand, the bone is probably rancid, and might cause a little digestive upset. Then again, dogs eat road kill without so much as a burp. So I wouldn't be overly concerned. Just keep an eye on him for diarrhea, as already suggested by Sara.

I wouldn't worry. I've never encountered that problem since mine generally eat their bones pretty quickly. However I have had them come across carcasses with maggot out in fields or on hikes. They've only attempted to chewon one once.

Other than that, upset tummy and digestive tract is about all I'd be concerned about. One thing to remember is if you spray your yard or fertilize and your dogs toys and chew bones are left on the grass, they can be tainted with the chemicals. So I'd be careful what you leave in the yard and how you treat your yard.
