It was Rat poision on the food!

how horrible!

The grain mfg probably uses it control rats but how did it get into the food, intentionally?

The vets were saying they were stumped that the symptoms were classic of poisioning, yet the animals invloved were not around anythings.

This is so scoary

WOW....

I know there are several forms of bacteia and fungus that can cause death as well that grows on alot of the grains used.....

But Poison? WOW. Makes you wonder if a disgruntled employee threw a bunch in the batch....

I don't know how accurate the information is, but I've read that the rat poison was sprayed on the fields the wheat was grown in. Somehow it made it's way into the wheat...maybe they sprayed it too late in the growing season, after the grain heads were already formed? Or maybe it was absorbed with the water the wheat plants took up, just like fertilizer would be absorbed.

Hi, New to this.

I have scanned the topics looking for the topic that caused me to join, and now I can't find it.
So I'm replying to this thread. Sorry.

I have an Eng. Springer -Casey, who is Five.
When she was a puppy, we had a terrible time find a dog food that she would eat.

finally, she settled on Puppy Chow...we'd mixed - dry with packet.
the older she got the less she ate, so back to the try this, try that, and Now she will not eat any Dry food other than Ol Roy.
and out of every type canned food avail. - she will smell it and walk away and there it will sit.
I'm worried that she is not getting the proper nutrition, and does not eat a lot, either -
although she is healthy and vigorus, gets much exercise, and is happy.

With the recent scare in dog food and the low quality of Ol Roy, what can I do about this?
Besides feeding her regular food?

I am in the same prediciment as you. I have 2 dogs, one like yours that will only eat Purina Pro Plan. And the other is on raw.

Strange that she doesnt like canned food though, dogs usually love that.

I would do a search on a raw diet and see if that would work, but if she doesnt like canned, that could also be a problem.

My vet now have several sample sizes of good quality food. I have been experimenting and she does liek a few so I am thinking of making a switch.

Can you try some kind of gravy and mix it with a better food? People tell me dogs are liek kids they wont starve to death they will eat when they are hungry. But I dont like analogy too well

I'm currently switching most all mine to raw. I'm so scared of all the stuff going on....

I would try mixing a little boiled chickens tock and rice and see if that would work.

I would suggest RAW to anyone who can do it. It's best for the dogs and you don't have to worry about something getting into the food. Lots of sites are out there about how to start with Raw and whatnot. You will ALWAYS know what your dog is eating and that it's complete and what she would be eating naturally in the "wild".

Ture, Just be sure you know how to feed raw, and not just throw meat out there!!!

Also be aware that many meet products from the store have hormone influence in them,and this can negatively affect your dogs health. I don't eat store baught meat for that purpose. I have bad reactions to artificial hormone.

A butcher shop is a great place to go. Most good ones let the cattle set in open pastures for a month or two before slaughter so let any hormone or chemicals work their way out. At least thats how the ones here do it.

I need to find a Co-op for people food around here. Read a book about food and even pesticides are a problem in meat...urgh... I want a range cow for dinner if I eat a steak! No doubt you have that out where you are right sam?

Often there are co-ops for organic meat for raw feeding. Butchers like to get rid of their "waste" and to give that to the dogs is great... Chicken backs and necks...knuckle bones...and the tripe/stomach contents. Definately learn about feeding it before you do.
