Hi guys,

I know that this has been discussed before, but I can't find it.

What can you get or do to stop 4 dogs from eating each others poop? I have 3 Maltese and a Shih Tzu. The Maltese were not doing this until I added the Shih Tzu puppy. She started eating her own, then started eating theirs, now they are all eating. I cannot express how gross this is. Embarassed

The Maltese are all a year old and the Shih Tzu is 4 months. They are all pad trained. They are fed twice a day and are given treats throughout the day and have water available. I attempt to clean up the pads as soon one goes and I scold them when I catch them in the act. So far, no change.

I also have an issue with one of the male maltese drinking urine as the other one goes. He acts as though his buddy is a water fountain. Any suggestions on stopping this would be great too. Confused

Thanks,
Bama

Hi all dogs do this and what you can do to stop it is clean up the mess straight away as they have finished no poop means no eating it.

The other methods are putting iron in there diet which comes in the form of pills which are what humans take, anything with an acidic taste will make there poop takes foul and so dogs should stop, But this is not always the case and its the clean the poop up quick method.

As for the drinking urine i have been told by many a vet and breeder this can be a sign one or more dogs may have either a water infection or diabetes which both make the urine stronger smelling and tastes nicer to the dogs...

I had the exact smae problem with my dog. He's a carin terrier. He would eat our lab's poop. He's better now though. We try to clean up the poop everday, so (like mike said) they don't get the chance to eat it. But the other thing that works is.....You can't be there to clean up every pile of poop, everytime they go (especially since you have 3 dogs, thats alot of poop. So when you let them out, try to keep them entertained, with a frizbee, or a tenis ball. This way they won't wander around looking for something to get into, or eat (like your other dog's poop). The only reason that they eat it is because they get bored, and curious, and they just get into things like that. If you are out there, and one starts to sniff at the pile of poop, just call them over to you, say "No" and through them a ball or something. Trust me, you need to break them of this habbit ASAP.
But, my dog still occasionally sniffs around at it, but hes ALOT better than he has ever been.
I hope I helped alittle
