when it rains, it pours

well..after my last update..our pet situation got very interesting. THe steroid shot the vet gave Bear gave him a tempoary steroid induced psychosis. He got very aggressive and the explains why he went back after Ranger that day. The next day he bit a dog that simply walked up to him(dog was loose, Bear was leashed...no damage to either dog) He attacked my cat and snapped at my brother. After the steroid was out of his system...he returned to his normal self. Unfortunately, he did a lot of damage to my cat Brak. In one snap, he broke seven ribs, herniated her diaphram and collapsed a lung. I pried him off of her, reciving multiple nasty scratches and bites from Brak(I had to get a tetanus shot and a round of antibiotics) and rushed her to the vet. When we got there, she didn't look too bad, the vet put her on fluids, thinking she just had a single puncture...she wasn't bleeding at all. This was late in the afternoon and they were busy, so they didn't shave her till the next morning to find extensive brusing and a flail chest, so they rushed her into surgery, called me and I told them to go ahead and repair her. 4 days later, she came home. I took her back 8 days later to get her staples out and one little part hadn't healed, so he bandaged her and told me to take it off in a few days. When I took it off, the wound was open and was making a s**k noise. I slapped that bandage back on so fast and sped to the vet and dropped her off. Well, her lung collapsed again..all the repairs he had done didn;t take due to infection, so he just took most of it out and flushed it a lot and debrided until it was clean in there...well..he had a huge hole with nothing to fill it, so he took a section of abdominal wall to close it. They called me afterwards and since they didn;t call me before(he said the staff figured i might put her down, and they didn't want to give up on her after they'd done so much) he would discount the sugery quite a bit, which was great since we spent about $1000 on her through all of this. He gave her a 50/50 chance of survival. The next day...the darned cat came home...she's tough. Day before yesterday was 11 days after that sugery and she got her staples out. She's all healed up..looks great. She's an amazing cat. She's staying at my brother-in-law's house, where I'm staying at night now...luckily he only lives about a mile from my parents' house, which in where my dogs are.(our house still isn't done). So I spend my day driving back and forth between animals.

I'd really like to get something for the vet and his staff since they were so wonderful through all of this. I don't know what to get them though. Any ideas? I'm sending this picture with it that I photoshopped. Our vet has a really good sense of humor.

I'm so glad that your cat is alright, and that Bear is back to normal. Sounds like you have one tough kitty! And I love the little card, lol, that's great. As far as a thank you, I work at a vet and I know that we all REALLY appreciate when someone brings in a cake. We often have cakes brought in after helping someone with their animal, and we all love them!

Oh man, how awful! predniizone is soo nasty. Glad to hear Brak isa okay and hope Bear is back to normal. My brother was psycotic on it. his wife had to monitor him so wouldnt do something. And last week my mom got her dog a pred shot. the dog went crazy and started eating everthing thing in site. she was pulling her hourseplants down and devouring them, she couldnt let her in yard by herself because some of her plants are poisionous.

Wow. I never heard this about steroids. I give Indiana prednisone pills every now and then b/c of his allergies. I don't know if the pills are enough to induce 'psychosis', as compared to a shot, but I wish I had known b/c I would have watched him with the other dogs and the cat afterward. I never noticed him acting any different, but like I said, I never paid attention.

I don't know about the pills, but we certainly didn't think about it either until it happened. The vet said it was pretty rare, but leave it to me to have the dog that has the adverse reaction. I took some pics of the kids today, thought i'd share since I hadn't posted in a while.
