My cat Ted may have glaucoma

Hey there,

It has been a while since I have been to these boards. My cat Ted (who tested positive for FIV two years ago and has been otherwise healthy) has one eye that does not change in bright light. (I forget if dialation is when the pupil shrinks or gets bigger, but his does not shrink when the other eye does.)

Yesterday this eye was very watery, so I took him to the vet today. I am new to the area so this was Ted's first visit to the new doctor. (It was my first visit to this doctor too!)

At first she tought it was something FIV related (I forget what she said), but then she changed her tune and thought something else. Finally, upon testing the pressure in his eye, she determined glaucoma, with pressure just over the borderline, or something that indicated it was more treatable than not treatable and that vision could still be saved. Turns out her husband is a vet opthamologist specialist, so I am to bring Ted to him in a week.

Meanwhile, I have to give Ted two different eye drops three time daily: Trusopt and Pred. Acetate.

Since this is a new vet, can anyone weigh in on whether this sounds to be about right for treatment currently? She called her husband for a consult while I was there. I'm all for taking him to the specialist (who happens to be her husband). But is waiting a week.... yet giving him these drops...does that make sense?

Sorry I can't be of any help but I hope your kitty will be okay.

Maybe someone else can help. I would hope a Vet would know what he was talking about. Maybe you could get a second opinion from another Vet.

I got an appointment with the specialist just three days after the initial vet visit.

Either the first pet didn't measure the pressure correctly the first time, or pressure has gotten considerably worse despite administering meds over the past few days.

The specialist says he is blind in that eye and that it is not at an early stage at all, that Ted is probably in some pain from the eye pressure. But his other eye is perfectly normal and healthy.

I was given a third med. to administer. I take him back in two weeks to see how he is responding, but the worst case/down the road plan is to remove his eye.
