i was given a 10 gal. aquerium by my moms friend so i could raise my fry. though i was wondering what type of filters can you use with small fry? they are about 8 days old and 11 days old. i have experienced how the water begins to smell. and thats after about a week. the filter i have in there is an aquaclear. please help

Hey whats the stock in there and what catagory of fishes lie inside.Also whats ur tank size

its going to be about 3-4 mickey mouse platy fri and im not sure exactally how many of the tuxedo platy fri will be in there. i assume quite a lot because they are hard to count. and in a 10 gal fishtank

11 days old- mickey mouse fri
9 days old- tuxedo platy fri

The Aquaclear with a sponge prefilter in the intake should be fine. I have 2 HOB filters on my fry tank and don't even have prefilters and my fry have always been fine.

As for the smell, how often are you doing water changes and vacuuming the substrate (or bottom glass if you don't have substrate)? It's really easy to overfeed fry and have all kinds of extra food sitting on the bottom.

i think its because of the extra food. my sis likes to feed my fish and the first time she fed them she put in enough to feed them for a week. i showed her how now. i cant really vaccume the bottom because of the small fry hiding in there. what does the foam look like? so i kno what to get
