I just got a shih poo. We named her Jasmin. She is 8 1/2 weeks old and so adorable! She is so sweet, she just loves to be held and cuddled. A couple of things I've been wondering about, how long will her fur get? Will it get real long like a regular shih tzu? Should i keep around her eyes trimmed? I've heard that you shouldn't do that because they need the hair around their eyes to protect them. Any more information would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you very much!!!

WELCOME to Auspet, and CONGRATS on your shih-poo!!!

Having two shih-poos myself, I gotta' say, great choice!!! LOL Mr. Green

To answer your questions:

Quote:
how long will her fur get

It'll keep growing and growing...be SURE you keep up with the grooming (namely, brushing), otherwise her coat will matt up VERY quickly, and that's not good (and not to mention, a pain in the you know what to deal with Wink )!!! Motto of the day: BRUSH, BRUSH, BRUSH (and brush THOROUGHLY, not just a quick run over, especially if you plan on keeping her coat long)!

Should i keep around her eyes trimmed?

Yes, you should keep the hair around her eyes trimmed so to prevent the hair from getting into her eyes and causing irritation and infections!!! (I should probably clarify, don't completely shave off ALL the hair around her eyes, just keep it trimmed back.) And be VERY careful when trimming around the eyes, if you haven't done it before, leave it up to an experienced groomer to do and/or have one show you how if you need to do it at home!!! Even if a groomer shows you how, please be extremely careful, puppies are very wiggly, and if the puppy happens to wiggle the wrong way when you are trimming around the eyes, that could be REALLY bad!!!

Best wishes with Jasmine!!! Very Happy

(P.S. We'd love to see some pics!!! Smile )

I think Mybaby said it all. You can trim the eye hair on the lower side if you want and type the topknow in a bow if you like.

Welcome and welcome to the land of shihpoos!! hehe..

There are bunches of us around this board, so you'll feel right at home (not that you wouldn't anyways! this place is great).

I also have a shihpoo (imagine that!) who was a year old in May.

Yes, I agree with everything mybabyshih said (she's our resident know it all, and I actually mean that as a compliment!!). You definitely will want to trim Jasmine's hair around her eyes... like most dogs, she'll get the tear/drain stain thang going and you'll want to trim that away. I suggest you go to a groomer for that. You really won't need to do that until she's about 4 months old-ish... I can't remember the first time I took Bailey. Although, it was after he was fully vaccinated... don't forget to get the bordatello (?) vaccination before going to the groomers.

and pictures of your baby is a requirement!! Don't try to wiggle out of it, or the shihpoo police will come and get you... hehe... Smile

since she is mixed breed there is no guarantee on how her coat will grow.. bella is a shih poo and her coat only grows to be about 2-4 inches long and doesn't matt easily.. i do trim the fur around her eyes, as others said it provides a more clean look, if you have any concern about trimming ask your vet or a groomer..
if you have any more specific questions ask away Razz

WELCOME!!!!!! Very Happy So great to hear of another shipoo among us!!!! I own maltipoos so I cannot give much in the way of advice, other than I keep my babies eyes cut back also. They are much more content that way and less irritants get into their eyes!

Good luck, and we are waiting for pics!

OH..I was hoping for pictures!! I had to come back and read the posts here....I am in hopes of finding a poo something to adopt!! First I thought a shiapoo, then we thought we found a poodle, ugh....now dh and I are just checking to see what is out there! I guess we just don't have many breeders in my area.

Anyway....I can't wait to see some cute pictures! Smile
