We'd built our own cat tree a couple years ago, but had to tear it down due to issues with Toonces (our super shy, super stressed out kitty who will be going back to the rescue group soon).
So mom & I built a new, even better tree (and yes, Romeo & Rusty actually can climb ladders)
It actually cost less than $50 to build because mom & dad went to the hardware store to get other things (we're also remodeling the house) and caught a sale so the discout they got covered the cost of the lumber for the tree, plus most of the jute twine on the posts was bought at the dollar store, which was also having a sale, for 50¢/roll, and the fabric on the shelves was also on sale at Walmart.

Actually, we don't brush them all that often. Ghost is short haired so mats & such isn't a problem. Emily absolutely cannot stand being brushed (she'll bite) so we shave her once or twice a year (last shave was about 4 months ago so it's getting close to it's normal length now), and Romeo & Rusty don't mat too often, but when they do, they're generally loose mats that can be brushed out fairly easily. With the excepton of Emily when her fur is long, we don't have to cut out mats too often.
Our biggest problem is Rusty has runny eyes (always has and the vet doesn't know what's causing it) so he gets his eyes cleaned out every day.

What a great cat tree!  Maybe I should build my own as well... Buying is expencive, at least here in Norway. Kyrre cant climb his old cat-tree anymore, because it's so wiggely (?). We still keep it as a scratching post though |
