The best brush I've found for smooth coated dogs like Labs is a Zoom Groom. It's a soft rubber curry, and boy will it pull the loose coat out without hurting the skin. It works a lot better than a horse curry. The soft rubber has an almost sticky texture that grabs the hair, and the teeth are blunt and soft, so it feels like fingers massaging the dog.
And don't feel like you have to brush the whole pup in one setting. Give him a treat, run the brush down his back, and if he's been a good boy, praise him and let him go. Gradually increase the amount of time you brush, but if he's being naughty, do not stop. That will only teach him that if he's naughty you'll stop. Settle him down, make one more swipe with the brush, then praise him and let him go. |
