Hi. I'm a newbie here, and wanted to ask your advice about my kitten. He is just over four weeks old, he is pure white like his mother, his father is unknown. The problem is, I noticed he had odd eyes when he was two weeks old. I don't mean the colour, as they were both blue. But his pupils are odd. He has one black pupil and one pink pupil. (Albino) His eye colour is now changing too, and he will have odd coloured eyes. I know that white cats can be dark eyed or albino, but I've never heard of having one of each, and being both! Is that possible? Has anybody on here heard of that before? Thanks for any replies!
Pauline. |

Hi and welcome to Auspet. It is possible that only one eye has been affected. When you take him to the vet to get his first exam/deworm/shots and so on the vet will be able to tell you exactly what is going on with his eyes. He sounds like a very unusual and cool looking kitten. I hope you will post some pic for us. |

Thanks for the welcome! He really is a lovely little boy, I will post a pic shortly! I have been trying to read up about red-eyed cats on the web, and have confused myself! There is lots of information for whites, (normal, albino, etc) but nothing on one with both! And maybe I'm wrong, but I got the impression that albinoism means lack of colour pigment. Like a recessive gene? But the normal eye goes against that, as surely you can't have both? Like I said....I'm confused!! (Nothing new!!)

So what you're seeing is both eyes are blue, but one has a pupil that shines red and the other doesn't? If he's still young, chances are his permanant eye color isn't showing yet. What will probably happen is the eye with the red pupil will stay blue (in cats, blue eyes almost always shine red - there's nothing unusual about that) and the other eye will eventually change colors to something like gold/yellow or green.
In some breeds of cats being "odd-eyed" (the official term for having two different colored eyes) is fairly common and doesn't involve the whole deafness thing. Romeo is a turkish van with one blue & one yellow eye and his hearing isn't affected:
Turkish angoras (which are all white and commonly odd-eyed), however, do tend to have the link between blue eyes and deafness. However, not all blue eyed or odd eyed white cats are deaf. It's a good idea to get him checked out, but he may be fine.
Oh and in cases where there is deafness related to blue eyes, on an odd eyed cat, it would be on the same side as the blue eye.
EDIT: Oh, and to get your picture to show up, you need it hosted somewhere online like on Photobucket.

Hi.
To make an avatar (image below your member name):
1) You need a small pic (around 80X80). If you can make any of your pics this small, just right click on the pic, then click on "properties" and copy the URL address. Then come back here to Auspet. If you can't make your pics small try using www.tinypic.com or www.photobucket.com.
2) Click on your profile. Scroll down to the bottom. You will see "Link To Off-Site Avatar". Paste the URL address here and then click submit.
To post a pic in your post:
1) Go to www.snapfish.com (it's free).
2) Upload your pics.
3) Right click on the pic and then click on "properties" and copy the URL address.
4) Paste the URL address with the "img" tags. You can either click on the "img" tags above or you can type it in. It should look like this:

5) Then click submit.
Good luck. |

| Oh, isn't Romeo a gorgeous kitty!! Thats exactly what I meant by having one red pupil and one black. I feel so much better now after all your replies and help, thanks! Little Caspar is now six weeks and two days, and is being awkward about shifting onto solids! No matter how much I give him 'tastes' of kitten food, and press a tiny bit into his mouth, he still will not eat it himself! I'm thinking of keeping mum away for a day, to see if he will get hungry enough to eat some. She is of course, only too willing to keep him s**k! |

| Hi! I'm new here. We have just adopted our very first kitten. His name is Envoy (he was found in the wheel well of an Envoy) and he is just the sweetest little guy. He's between 4-6 mos old and loves to be cuddled and petted. We have always had dogs and in June we had to put our beloved beagle Chester to sleep. At first I was adamant about no more pets but the house just doesn't seem the same without a fur face around. Well, my daughter has always wanted a cat, so we went to our vets and we immediately fell in love with Envoy. We will be bringing him home next Thursday. Since we are new to the world of cats just wondering if you have advice about what to expect. We have already gotten him a two-tiered scratching post and other toys to play with. I will keep you posted how things go! |
