Have you had the dog checked out by a vet? Assuming that all medical issues can be ruled out and the dog is eating, drinking well, all bodily functions are normal then its behavioural.
You havent given much information though so I have a few questions:
Do you know if there is something specific that triggers it off?
Does he do it more with one particular person being around/not being there?
Is he getting plenty of exercise?
Is he left shut in somewhere too long/home alone all day while your working?
What 'EXACTLY' do you do when he starts whining?
Do you punish him in any way when he whines?
All of the above (and Im sure Ive missed things off the list) but these things will/can either be the cause of the whining or your actions in how you deal with it can actually re-inforce the whining. There are some dogs that are natural whiners and it can take a lot of work to get them to stop but in other cases its an easier fix, your best bet would be to have a reputable behaviourist come in and do an assesment because that way they can probably pick up on things that are making the pup worse that you may not even realize your doing. |

If the vet gave you an all clear on the dog's health - then think about this ----
Some dogs are just very vocal! I was at the groomers yesterday and there was a husky there for a bath. I asked my friend who owns the business what all the racket was. She laughed and told me it was loud-mouth louie!!! It sounded like the poor dog was being tortured!!! I went in the back to see this guy --- I nearly started crying - because it was so funny!!!! Every time the groomer picked up his paw he let out these long loud yowls. She did it a couple of times for me to see!!!!
The dog was a sweetie so they let him roam around the grooming area - I saw him get some water and stand by the door -- he just yowled and yowled! And then the whining started!!! Oh - my !!! It was so funny. The guy wasn't under any stress - they said that he comes in for his monthly - and makes all of that racket every time. Maybe he is just having his chat with his groomer -- sort of like the women at the beauty shops?
There is a pug-beagle mix in my dog class -- the snorts and whines all through the class.
And finally - my berner pup is very vocal. Between yowling when he is happy, to whining for a hug or to be held - and when he yawns? Everyone in the house knows. He is very enthusiastic about his yawning!!!! That gets a huge yowl!
If there aren't any medical or serious social or training issues that are causing the whining - I think you should just enjoy it! Not all dogs are vocal and it may be just a special unique quality of your rottie!!! And besides - he is still young - he may outgrow the habit! |
