You guys are my friends so I want to post this here. Patches, my cat with the heart murmur, went in for his yearly check-up. He has been losing weight and not grooming as much anymore. He is 15 years old. The vet said his heart still sounds good, but she was concerned that he may have a thyroid tumor. She did blood work and the thyroid and kidney values came back normal, but she says he has diabetes.

Jiimiya, that is actually good news though since diabetes is so treatable, how do they want to treat it? I had a cat that had diabetes diagnosed at 8 he took pills for years and then eventualy needed insulin shots which were a piece of cake. He passed away at 15 because his kidneys were the thing that finally went. Once patches starts treatment you should see a fast improvment of putting on weight and looking better. His diet may need to be changed too.

She wants to do insulin shots twice daily. I doubt I can change his diet. I have tried before.

Poor Patches. Is he overweight? My vet just put my male cat on prescription m/d food to get his weight down.

No, he is underweight. I have always been careful to never let my cats get fat. With diabetes, his body can't process the sugar and therefore he is losing weight.
