How to get rid of urine smell?

My cat is 7, almost 8 years old and I've had him since he was 8 weeks old. I have never had an issue with him not going in his litter box. He was fixed as soon as he was old enough, we thought it would lessen the chance of him spraying. So now I no longer live at home (I haven't for the past 4 years or so) but have just moved 2 months ago to a new house. We've got his litter box in a room off the bathroom where he's well aware that's his littler box. I've recently noticed urine smell and found he's been using a rug in front of the shower to pee on. Now I am starting to smell it throughout my house. I scrubbed the tile floor in the bathroom, washed the rug and replaced it, but I put his food dish there thinking maybe he won't pee where his food is. Well that didn't work, maybe I didn't get the scent of pee out from the tile. He's never pooped anywhere, but I know he's peeing. I can't find it, but I can smell it. Is there any way I can stop him from doing this? We are about to have a baby and I can't have him doing this in my house, he's going to ruin our home, the carpet and whatnot. His litter box is cleaned daily, he's the only cat and I just took him to the vet to see if it was a medical problem, but he got a clean bill of health. I am in desperate need of advice. I love my cat to death, but I can't handle this. Any info is greatly appreciated.

My suggestions to you are to first get a blacklight so you can find where each spot is. And then use an enzymatic cleaner to clean up all of the spots. I also had to pick up the rug in front of my bathtub and only put it down long when I am in there and then pick it back up. I also took up the shoe moulding and replaced it thinking that the pee got back behind there. Next I am going to get some of that Cat Attract litter. Maybe that will work for you?

Who knows why they do this? I have read and read about litterbox adversion and try to follow each suggestion. I love my boy to death too, but want to toss him out just about every day. Sad

Try and use some white vinegar. I had a problem with urine smell in our house and I used the vinegar in our carpet cleaner and the odor is starting to ease ( urine smell ). Don't use the vinegar full strength but dilute it and see if that will work for the smell in your house.

It's always best to rule out medical issues first (most common is a UTI--urinary tract infection). Then if your cat is fine medically then you can try and resolve the behavioral issue as to why he is urinating outside of the litter box. You have moved and this may be a possible trigger. Take your cat to the vet first and then go from there. This issue can be resolved if you take the time to find the cause.
