Stupid question but. Do you need a male and a female to spot out the White spots on the male in the Breeding season? And how old do they have to be to spot that? I really want to figure out their gender. Also can i feed them lettuce and frozen peas thanks.[/quote]

I started seeing the breeding tubercles on my fantails when they were about 2 1/2". I'm not 100% sure if they need a female present, but my guess is they do.

And yes, peas & lettuce should be fine (the peas at least should help prevent swim bladder problems/constipation). But since peas are sort of like fishy exlax, I wouldn't feed them too often. Maybe just 1 or 2 a week.

Are the white spots that you are talking about found on the wen/head area? One of my orandas had that going on about a month ago. I suppose that means its a boy?

I don't know about the wen, but they do appear on the gill plates and the edges of the ventral fins.

You can kind of see them on the white fish:
