Hey folks: I am a newbie and have a big concern! My son has wanted a puppy for many years. We have two labs now and I didn't really want another dog. However, for his 16th birthday all he wanted was a pit puppy. I was dead set against it because I, like a lot of other people, was ignorant enough to believe half of what I had heard about this breed. However, my son, being the persuader that he is, won! We went to "look" at the puppies and of course my heart melted - If I had the money, I would've taken each and every one of them. So we got "Memphis" and I love the little guy so much that I sit at work and cry because he is home alone....... (I've called in sick a few days just to be with him) - NOW - the hard part - my son is determined to have his ears cropped and I am about to kick him out on the street because of it........ I absolutely can not stand to know that my grand son will hurt for one second in his life - will someone please either enlighten me or my son about this procedure?

Honestly if done young enough it's as minor as ear peircing... BUT most vets won't do it early because they want the dog out (not necessary but very PC). I find the problem in putting the puppy under... It's dangerous and for such a minor procedure...I find it is not worth it...

IF your son still insists make sure he finds a vet that does it on APBT's and get references of dogs that he's done in the past. It's not that serious of a procedure...it's not even that painfull if done young enough... Keep that in mind when discussing it...

APBT's are more socially accepted with ears rather than with cut ears... That's also something you might want to keep in mind.

Thanks Sara - you have helped...... The puppy is 11 weeks and the vet is the vet that has handled all of my animals for 12+ years. He does APBT and does a good job from what I have seen and I do trust him entirely - - I guess I am just freaked out because I had a prairie dog that didn't wake up from the anesthesia and am not thrilled about this guy being put under.......... and the pain factor - it has come down to which do I lose? my son or dog? My son is 16 - he can take care of himself.......

Well that hardly seems nice, a 16 year old on the street, wouldn't he take his dog with him and do it anyway. The only scarey part is if they are put under, but for the most part its not too dangerous. I've never had a bad experience myself, but I've seen some really bad jobs. Thats the most important part, knowing the vet who does it. One vet around here really sux and the girl keeps going back to him because he is cheap?

True Pits - I was only joking about putting my kid on the streets!!!!! I respect his opinion and even though I bought the puppy - it is his. Thanks for your input - I'm starting to settle down a bit - the appointment is tomorrow - wish my little guy luck and I will let you know how it turns out..... if I can figure out how to do the picture thing - I'll post his before and after shot....... he is so adorable I could eat him up. Thanks again.

Congrats on the latest addition to your family. Its so nice when one more person is converted to a Pit lover.

On the general board there are lots of great tips on how to load the pic.

You can post your pics a little bigger than what they are I believe.
I think all you have to do is
if you have them on picture trail?
when you open the photo album, instead of clicking on the small pic, open it into the middle of the screen where it gets a big display, then right click and copy the image location and use that one, thats what i do and it works so if you want to make your pics larger, that should work.

He looks really sweet!
I think he will still look just as sweet without his ears even though it might take away but thats ok. He doesn't have big ears, I think they look beautiful natural. I wouldn't get them clipped but thats just my opinion.
I couldn't see Shianne without her ears ...it goes with her personality.

This pup is so CUTE!!! I love his ears. I love Pit ears anyway because a person can get so much expression from them. But ear crop is a personal preference, that's O.K. too, if it's done at a relatively young age by a qualified Vet. I think P.B.T. are the most addicting dogs out there. They more than exceed anyone's expectaions. I think they are wonderful family dogs.

awww....so cute! I just couldn't crop those ears, they're sooo cute. But I like natural ears, but I think the pup would look fine cropped, but those are great ears! Wink

I think they look fine either way. That pup does have some nice ears on him though. Its all about personal preferance. I hope everything goes well for you, and let us see pics with the new ears once its all done.

I really wouldn't want to have hers any other way looks wise. Not all that important to me, but I'm really glad she does have them cropped.

No Crop for this girl!

Her ears give her a ton of character, she moves them, perks them, puts them back, even will have bat ears. I love her ears too.

what cute pup. he has the most beautiful gray coat I dont know anything about pits, but isnt the grey color unsual for pits?
