Chances are you have 2 birds of the same sex, Since there is only certain breeds of lovebird that can be visually sexed.

All you can do is keep them seperated and see what happens chances are the eggs will not hatch if they are indeed male and female birds i have added some links to lovebird care and breeding and hopefully this will help you out

so if they are male and female i should still keep them seperated??? the egg looks soft and she is sitting on it, so if they are both female how did they have a egg?

she only had one egg? is that all she will have? i keep looking things up and i keep seeing that people are saying that the bird will eventually get bored of her eggs and then you should take them out? whats with that? If the egg is fertilized i can keep the baby right? how will i know if its fertilized or not??

Even if you have 2 females they will stay lay eggs just that they will not be fertile.

Lovebirds lay 1 egg every other day and do not start to incubate until they have laid the second egg.
They lay between 5-6 eggs in most cases not all will survive this is just part of nature.

Incubation period is between 22-25days.

You can candle the eggs in about 10 days to make sure they are fertile. This is done very simply by gently holding the egg and holding a flashlight upto the egg. If a membrane ( what looks like a spiders web) is seen in the egg then it is fertile. If the egg is clear then it is not fertile. Another good thing is to soak the egg in water one week before it hatches. Do this by placing the eggs in shallow dish of warm water for about 5 seconds. If the egg is not fertile it does not means the birds are infertile, sometimes the pair are not ready (too young or too old) you have 2 females or they could not be in the best physical condition. The female needs to be in the proper cycle for the breeding process. Most lovebirds make good foster parents.

If the eggs are not fertile you can leave the eggs with the birds until they either decide to abandon them or until 10days after the incubation period has ended, After this time you can safely remove the eggs.

If you want to keep the baby after it has been weaned thats fine after all they are your birds.

What type of love bird do you have do you have any pictures of them as some species of lovebirds can be visually sexed most can not.

Hopefully you will have a true pair and will be able to put the male back in with the female.

You can still put the other bird back in with the female with the egg if you like, then if it turns out to be male and female once the eggs have hatched and babies are starting to try new food you would have to seperate adults as they will breed again.

Observe both birds when they are sat on a perch a female will stand with her legs further apart then the male does.

The female is usually larger than the male also her tail feathers will be all the same length and shape the males tail will be longer and rounded at the ends.

I have added a link to give you some info on different lovebirds from what i can make out you could have 2 females..

If you put the birds together and give them a nest box you will notice which is the female as she will tuck nesting material into her wings and take it to the nest the male will also do this but does not usually succeed.

The male will sit outside the nest while the female is inside and the male will feed the female.

Hope this link helps you..

Like i say they lay 1 egg every second day and do not usually bother with the eggs until the second has been laid.

Keep an eye on her and see how she goes this may have just been a one off..
