I'm in the process of moving and have had to place my dog in my parents kennel which is outside in their backyard. My boyfriend and I love our dog and made it very comfortable for him with a dog house that has carpeted floor, walls , and ceiling and his pillow and blanket are in there also. He has lots of toys to play with and gets to come out at LEAST twice a day and play. BUT...there was a small hole in the fence and we put a large concrete block there to prevent Trick from getting out. He still got out and i could not for the life of me, figure out how, until one day, after playing, i watched him. He was backing up to the opposite end of the kennel, running, and ramming/head-butting the block until it was moved. He's a very well tempered dog, good to everyone and acts like he dies when i leave the room. I know he's unhappy because he's not inside anymore. But I just don't know what to do. He'll be back inside in about 2 weeks, but in the mean time, I don't want him to give himself a concussion. I know his head is rock solid but he's already got a spot on his head from HEADBUTTING the concrete. Any helpful ideas would be great.... IP: Logged |

Unfortunately I don't have any helpful ideas besides maybe a chain??? But it's funny that this came up. Our male lives inside as well, but when I moved I kept him on my fathers farm so he had plenty of room outdoors. Anyways, now he loves outside but only some times. When I put him outside I place him on a line for a while so he can run around but wont get out. I guess when I placed the line on the stake in the ground I gave him too much length, b/c he still gets to the fence. Well sure enough, about 2 months ago I am driving up to my house (corner house) and I notice pickets on my fence are knocked down. At first I thought that maby some kids did it but then I see my dog in action!! He backs up, lowers his head, runs and headbutts the pickets down. My male is very friendly just like your dog, but just is extremely adventerous! His motto, if he can't fit under, he goes through. And it's funny because he is very smart and VERY well trained but this just happens to be something that I can't solve. It's not really too much of a problem for me though seeing as how he's only outside once in a blue moon. Sorry for the lack of help!!! Good luck, Trae [This message has been edited by PitNest (edited 12-02-2003).] IP: Logged |

Yeah, Trick definately knows if you can't go under, you go through. I guess maybe it's a male thing because my friends Pit rams the door when he's inside. Maybe it's the adventurous part of Trick, too because he definately has to see and be seen EVERYWHERE. I wish I could just let him roam free but I'm just so scared someone will hurt him (because of his breed) or steal him. Not to mention I don't think he's very "street/car" smart. He's never really had the chance to avoid them so I don't know if he'd get squished. :-( As for the blocks he's ramming, I guess I'll just have to let him learn his own lesson. He's very smart and I thought he'd catch on by now. He must just be really unhappy, and there's not much I can do about it right now. Bad mommy. :-( IP: Logged |

I wish I could offer you some advice. Sade has done the same thing, One time I was in the shower and she head butted her way through the back storm door. and ofcourse she didnt stop there she had somehow pushed some bricks aside from a hole that someone (*cough* my setter) dug. She ended up in the chiropracters office backyard next door who is never ever open. So I had to climb their 6 foot fence to find out she could get back under the fence herself. I was so angry with her, I really let her have it and scolded her with a louder tone than I usually do and then I took away her couch privilidges for the rest of the day and it hasnt happened since. I dont really think she learned anything from it, I think she dosent do it anymore because I watch her like a hawk when she is outside. IP: Logged |

The only thing I can think of it to patch the fence and remove the block. IP: Logged |
