new here, i'm posting around just about everywhere to see if someone has any ideas. the horse i ride has been lame since august. the woman who owns him didn't want to call the vet out right away (we're a bit short on money where we are), and so we rested him a bit to see if it would heal itself. it didn't, so she had the chiropractor out, hoping it was something he could fix. chiropractor's been out 3 times, hasn't helped at all. at first we noticed that his hock was a little warm, but it went away with cool water. the horse is fine as long as he's walking, and is even okay trotting on his uninjured side, but when he trots on the injured side, he starts to limp. he drags his foot and his hock is plainly hurting him. i've noticed that after he trots there's a soft swelling on the outside of his hock. does anyone have any ideas? i think it might be bone or bog spavin, but i'm not sure. if i can come up with an idea, his owner could be convinced to have the vet out to see him. No matter what the costs, you should always have a vet out! They can work out payment plans and sometimes discount if you need. Sounds to melike he may have a sprain, or even a bone spur. Stall rest him and hydro it twice daily with warm water until the vet can come out. What is the weight of the horse? You can even give him a little bute to help ease the pain, if you don't have bute, Asprin crushed in his feed will do the trick too. Sassy is about 900lbs, we gave her 25 asprin twice a day for pain when she foundered.
