Goldfish prefer cold water so no heater is necessary although your sucker fish might need one depending on the kind of suckerfish it is. Also, goldfish tend to be VERY dirty fish so depending on the size and filtration of your tank you should probably clean it once a week.

This is what happened with my goldfish a couple years back:

Bought 10 "feeder" goldfish to go into 29 gallon tank. Wow, dirty fish, got another filter so I now have nearly 60 gallons worth of filtration for a 29 gallon tank and 10 fish. Still had to vacuum gravel and change water once every two weeks just to keep it from looking gross.

IMO goldfish are not worth their trouble as they will eventually grow too large for even the largest tanks. You would do well with them in a pond.

I agree, most goldfish really aren't suited for anything other than ponds. IMO, the only ones that could be kept in aquariums are the fancy (round bodied) ones, but even they need large tanks since they can get 9" long and almost as tall. For them, you'll need at least 30 gallons for one and another 10 for each additional fish. Plus they're very messy so you need good filtration and either understock your tank or be very good about monitering your nitrAtes and doing appropriate water changes.

I have a 29 gal. tank,I over wintered goldfish from the pond.Itook them in 2 years ago and have not put them out yet! They are so pretty with their long fancy tails. I cant part with them. There are 5 in this tank and they do fine. They are all about 4 years old now. I dont over feed and the tank stays clean because they eat off the bottom. So go for it! I LOVE mine! Good luck! WENDY
