If you ever find yourself in the Bay Area, you owe it to yourself to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I am currently in Santa Cruz, CA on business and visited there today. It is amazing! They have a one million gallon tank that houses yellowfin tuna, hammerhead sharks, stingrays, barracudas, and a leatherback turtle. They also have a 250,000 gallon three-story kelp forest that houses over 30 different species. The place is crazy and you can spend all day there and never get bored. I will never look at my puny 75 gal tank the same again. Visit this aquarium if you can. It is truly awesome! IP: Logged |

I went there last year, it was a great experience! If the jellyfish exhibit is still there that is the one thing you HAVE to see. I think it was called "Jellies: Living Art." And take a camera! I came away with over 200 nice pics that you would never guess were shot through glass. And yes, I've never looked at my tank quite the same way since! IP: Logged |

Hi Lee Tron and tina1, It would be great if you could post some of your best pics from Monterey Bay. There is supposed to be a great aquarium in Chatanooga Tennesse and the World Aquarium in Dallas Texas. I'm ashamed to say that as close as I am I haven't been to the one in Dallas. I think it would be great if we could get pics from all of these world class aquariums. IP: Logged |

kc5gvn, I would absolutely love to show off some of my pics! Do you have any tips on how to do this? I've tried numerous times with no luck, do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Tina IP: Logged |

Score! Ok, first for some technical notes! All these photos were taken by yours truly with a Fuji Finepix 3800 3MP digital camera, 100 ISO. They haven't been altered in any way. Also, I hold the copyrights to these photos as per U.S. law. They are for your viewing pleasure only, they aren't to be posted elsewhere online or saved to your computer without my express written permission. On with the show...
I have a few more good ones I'd like to share if you guys are interested. See ya! IP: Logged |

Thank you fabbyfishies! I'm somewhat of an amateur photographer so its nice to hear when someone likes my pics! Just some info in case you do plan to go: The aquarium is of course located in Monterey, about 20 minutes from Salinas and about 5 hours from Sacramento. I would recommend buying your tickets in advance over the phone. You will get to use a different entrance and its kinda nice to walk past all the people waiting in line IP: Logged |

The aquarium is located on Cannery Row (yes, the same Cannery Row made famous by John Stienbeck). The closest airport is San Jose International. From the airport take I880 south to hiway 17 through the mountains to Santa Cruz and from there pick up hiway 1 south to Monterey. As you approach Monterey, you will see signs directing you to the aquarium. Sorry kc5gvn. I gots no pics, just memories. I don't normally carry a camera on business trips as I am not too big on the tourist thing. Quick note: One of the volunteers at the aquarium told me that the 1 million gal aquarium ia actually a closed system. Most of the aquarium is fed directly from the ocean but the big aquarium is too far inland for this to be feasable. Also, they also have to heat the tank from 55 (typical bay temperature) to 68 for the species it houses. IP: Logged |

Thanks Lee Tron, That is some interesting information. I would have thought that the bay temperature would be higher than 68 degrees. I'm guessing that they have some type of special filtration set up to take care of ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/protein and such without having to do a 25% water change. Do you think they actually counted the number of inches of fish??? LOL tina1, You mean I can't download your pictures for my desktop? They really are awsome. I especially like the first one of the jelly fish and the one of the dragonfish. IP: Logged |

Ok, fine kc5gvn! Make me feel guilty already I just know there's people out there who will pass photos off as there own. I've seen it before and I know that there's probably non member random "strangers" looking at this site as well. I don't know them and wouldn't feel comfortable with them storing my photos. That said, I trust you kc5gvn and most of the long term members here. So go ahead and enjoy them, download away! [This message has been edited by tina1 (edited 03-11-2004).] IP: Logged |

Hey C.small jaws, That is a wimplefish or the scientific name is the heniochus acuminatus. Sometimes known as the poor mans moorish idol or the pennant fish. You're right, it's a cool fish. IP: Logged |

He Hee... I felt that way when I came home too. That trip was actually what got me back "in" to fish. I started buying fish again and getting plants. Where as I'd kind of gotten tired and just let them alone for quite a while before. IP: Logged |

Hooben, Are you sure that's a wimplefish? I remember being at the aquarium and thinking "that's a wimplefish" and then seeing it labled something else, but I can't remember what it was. I don't think a wimplefish has that long extension on the dorsal fin but I am not sure. I guess I'll have to go back to the aquarium this weekend and see as I am still in Santa Cruz. laters... Hi Lee Tron and Hooben, Ya'll had me beat. I thought it was a Moorish Idol. It was kind of hard to figure out. Moorish Idols are next to impossible to keep in a closed system because the eat live coral. Not only does it kill the coral but creates nitrite problems in a closed system from the dying coral. Congratulations. IP: Logged |

THATS IT!! I KNEW it wasn't labled a wimplefish, although the two are verrrry similar. "Moorish Idol" was the name on the placard next to the display that housed this fish. I just love it when a memory is triggered like that! What a rush.... Thank you kc5gvn, you just saved me $20.00 for a ticket to the aquarium. I was going to go back tomorrow just to settle this debate.

On second thought, I think that is a wimplefish in tina1s pics. This is a moorish idol:
and this is a wimplefish:
the differences (and similarities) are more apparent when viewed this way. But then again, perhaps I am clueless (take out the "perhaps" and that's a true statement). Maybe what I saw really was a moorish idol in the tank and I just assumed that it was the same fish that tina photographed. I seriously doubt an outfit like the Monterey Aquarium would make such a blatant error. [This message has been edited by LeeTron (edited 03-12-2004).] IP: Logged |

Oh kc5gvn, you give me hope that some day my humble dreams of being a photographer will be realized! Just for you making me feel confident I've included the last of my "good ones" from the aquarium.
