I am a new fish owner who has a 30 gallon tank with 4 goldfish. I statred my aquarium about 1 month ago. Two days ago one of my fish became far less active than normal. He just stays at the bottom of the tank near a bushy plant. Is it sick and dying and what do I do to help him? IP: Logged |

I dont have a hermometer in my fish tank so I dont know what the temperature is. The Pet people at wal mart said to just make sure the water was cold. I let the filter run for 5 days before I put the fish in it and it has not been cloudy yet but I know something is wrong because that fish has died this morning. The only think I've put in the water is the water conditioner that had come with the tank. I dont know what the water parameters are but I will be going to Pets Mart to get products they'd recommend. Welcome to Auspet! I have a pond in the backyard, since goldfish grow to 12 inches, they do better in that setting. Every once in a while, I will buy a young goldfish and will keep it in my 29 gallon hospital tank to make sure they are doing fine. I find that the goldfish do better when there is an airstone in the tank, they need it to remain active in such a small setting. I run a bio wheel 330 filter and test the water regularly. Sometimes stores will have small goldfish for cheap. They are called feeder fish and often are not very healthy. If you buy these, then expect 1 out of 5 to die. Don't feel bad, goldfish are hard to keep. Take in a sample of your water to be tested at your local shop, and I hope that you have a filter running. Good luck! If you only let the filter run for 5 days before adding the fish, your tank wasn't cycled. Definitley get test kits and post the results here. Chances are the ammonia and/or nitrIte are off the scale and that's what's killing the fish. In the mean time start doing daily water changes. That will help bring the ammonia & nitrIted down a little. -Chelle IP: Logged |
