Hey everyone, Im posting this for a friend of mine. He has an ick problem and cant seem to get rid of it. The most affected fish are his clown loach and columbian shark. He's tried IckGuard along with raising the temperature of the tank(per advice from the LPS) a few degrees and the problem is still getting worse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, IP: Logged |

Hello, Might want to try a different brand. I'm not sure if the fish can handle heat treatment which is different from just raising the temp. a few degrees. LPS reason for that advice speeds up the gestation period of ich therefore speeding up the elimination since it can only be treated off of the fish. Maybe someone else knows how much heat they can take. If you find out he could try heat treatment. Add salt if tank contains none then raise temp. to 85 or 86 for about a week or two.You have to add a couple of airstone to raise it that high. Don;t try that unless you know the fish can take it. Also you have to take the heat up slowly. I think the loach would probably be ok but not sure about the shark. I used the heat treatment on some angels of mine and it worked great. I'm not so quick to go to meds. I use them as a last resort. ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Personally, I wouldn't try salt with the clown loaches. I tried an ich medicine a while back that was safe for scaleless fish and tetras and worked pretty good, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was. I'll do some looking around and see if I can figure out what it was. Also, your friend should know that columbian sharks are actually brackish. They start out able to tollerate freshwater, but as they mature, they need more & more salt which the clown loaches won't tollerate. He'll most likely have to separate them pretty soon. -Chelle IP: Logged |

I found it. Clear-ich According to THIS SITE it is "specifically designed to combat Ich in scaleless and tight scaled species like Tetras, Eels, Loaches, etc." And Rid Ich + is also supposed to be safe for most scaleless fish. -Chelle [This message has been edited by t_chelle16 (edited 02-25-2004).] IP: Logged |

Since no one's mentioned this, I will at the risk of sounding repeatative: Did your friend remove the activated carbon/charcoal filter element from the filter(s) before treatment? The ich treatment will be ineffective if this filter element is not removed as it will neutralize the active ingredients in the ich medication. Be careful raising the temperature too high as well. The higher the temp the lower the oxygen saturation capacity of the water. Low O2 could stress the fish and exacerbate the situation rather than help. good luck IP: Logged |

Coppersafe by Mardel worked great rescently when my clown loaches had a bad ick outbreak. I divided the dose and gave it over 2 days. They all look good now. Check out this site (http://www.loaches.com/copper.html) for some interesting info on clowns, ick and coppersafe. Good luck! Scott IP: Logged |

Just to let everyone know, one of his clown loaches died. However, the shark and the other loach are recovering nicely. Thanks for all of your help IP: Logged |
