What would be the appropriate number of power heads and gph per each unit to use in a 55g tank? My tank is planted with 4 dwarf gouramis, 4 platys, 4 red-skirt tetras, 3 black-skirt tetras, 4 small clown loaches, 2 corys, and one 3 inch pleco. Are maxijets the brand of choice? Scott IP: Logged |

I like the "aqua clear" power heads they come in 5 different sizes... 201: 125gph.....$14 301: 174gph.....$16 402: 270gph.....$21.....125gph in reverse 802: 400gph.....$28.....175gph in reverse 901: 935gph.....$50 A good general rule is you want to filter all of your water at least 10 times per hour so you will want at least 500gph total between all of your filters. if you use the air hose on your powerhead it lowers the gph rates. what other filters do you have or plan to have on this tank? On my 72 gal bow front which is about the same demensions as the 55 I have 2 ph 402's and an Aqua clear 300 power filter. so I'm pushing about 800gph out of about 65 gal of water and the tank is always perfect. and on my 55 gal S.W. tank I have an emperor 280, seaclone 100 and 3 power head 301's so I'm pushing about 900gph out of about 50 gal of water. I would recommend 2 301's or 402's and an additional powerfilter. what size power filter you chose depends on which power head you buy. remember more is always better. IP: Logged |

I am currently running two Aquaclear 300s. I was wondering about adding the power heads because I recognize that the footprint of a 55g tank has a poor surface area to depth ratio wich impacts tank circulation and oxygenation. The power heads would definitely aid in circulation and help prevent too much waste from settling on the substrate. My concern is possibly having too much current. It seems that the plants might take a bit of a beating, but I would rather error on the side of over filtration. Thanks for the advice!!! Scott IP: Logged |
