For most aquarium kits:
ammonia - 0
nitrites - 0
nitrates < 20

Always 0. You have to cycle your tank before adding fish, otherwise the ammonia will eventually kill them

Temperature oC
pH 5 10 15 20 25 30
6.5 50 34 23 16 11 8
7.0 16 11 7 5 4 3
7.5 5 3 2 2 1 1
8.0 1.6 1.1 0.7 0.5 0.4 0.3
8.5 0.5 0.4 0.3 0.2 0.1 0.1
9.0 0.2 0.1 0.09 0.07 0.05 0.04
LC50 for SHORT TERM exposure

For example a ph of 8 with a temp. of 25 C the LC50 would be 0.4 The LC50 is a scientific term meaning. LC=lethal concentration and 50=one half. This being said a LC50 of 0.4 means of said number of fish (10) exposed to said level(0.4)one half will die (5).

It's also important, however, when talking about toxicities to differentiate between 'immediate' toxicity and chronic toxicity. If your PH is 6.5 and your temp. is 25 degrees Celsius, you may have one of the tough top 50 percentile fish that survive. Constant exposure to those levels will kill it eventually though.

Even low levels of ammonia are toxic over a long time frame.

thanks again. first of all i would like to add that we have well water so i don't think we have a problem with chlorine etc. our ph balance had never been off as we know of and we have never added any chemicals to our pond water. i hope this is ok. we usually only lose one or two small fish over the winter months. other than that we have never messed with the water. coining the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." so...back to this "black magic" doesn't the water get mirky while cleaning sinse water is continually being added to the pond? doesn't that make it difficult to clean the sludge? more imput needed on your ideas?
