Does anyone know how often is normal for a gourami to take air from the top? Some of my gourami seem to live up towards the top and are constantly sucking air. Others just take some air and dive back down. I worry about my water quality and think they might not have enough oxygen but everything seems ok. NTC IP: Logged |

no, your water is probably fine. gouramis are labrynths (spelling?) jus like bettas. they are able to come to the surface and breath oxygen as well as tkaing it in under the water. IP: Logged |

I don't think that's how it works lol. No but seriously I agree If the fish is otherwise healthy eating and all don't worry about it. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Umm, eating is definitely not a problem. They are all chowhounds. I swear if they even see movement from their tanks, they are already thinking I am coming to feed them. NTC IP: Logged |

I wouldn't worry too much. MY frogs (which also breath air) will sometimes get lazy and just lay on the top of the heater with just their nose sticking above the surface. That being said, it wouldn't be a bad idea to test the water for ammonia, nitrIte, and nitrAte. Ammonia can burn the gills and nitrIte limits the ammount of oxygen their blood can carry. Both of which will cause fish to breath heavily and gasp for air. -Chelle IP: Logged |
