Well, it sounds like you have adequate filtration and are good about water changes so it may not be the water quality, but just to be on the safe side, definitely get it checked. And FWIW, ammonia, nitrIte, and nitrAte, are all clear so just because the water looks clear, that doesn't necessarily mean it is safe. Also, by the time all those fish start to mature, you'll really want to keep a close eye on your water parameters because you will really be pushing the limit of the tank as far as bioload is concerned. But if you have good filtration, keep up with the water changes, and the fish get along, it might work. As for your oscar, I'm really not sure what it could be. Have you changed anything in the tank recently? Moved decorations? Added new fish? Could you post a pic of the area that looks "scruffy"? Hunger strikes are fairly common with oscars (mine once went 2 months eating maybe one pellet a day because they wanted earthworms and I didn't have any). Maybe the fish he had been picking on turned on him and now he's pouting. I'm really at a loss right now. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Is it just the lighting or does the rest of his body have a green tint? -Chelle IP: Logged |

its the lighting realy bad camera... his fins are black and the base of the fins are black and then go ito black specals then iinto the white and orng paderin. hes hiding in my male convics house and it protecs him form the other oscar witch is extreamly into envestigating. he has a small white dot on 1 of his pectoral fins looks like ich.. chould this little start of the infection be causing his "moaping". a bout 2 days befor the simtoms i re aranged the decor of the tank? his lips look sorta yellowy?? is that a sing of illness other then his ich spot. ill medicate the tank tomarrow when i pick up the ich meds or is it ok to add salt and incress temp?? i dont want to stress him more sorry for the fragmentation of the sentences gramer was never my forta ------------------ IP: Logged |

The black fins is normal for lutinos. I asked about the green because it almost looked like he was a REALLY pale tiger oscar, but the way you describe him, he definitely sounds like a lutino. Rearranging a tank will often make oscars sulk so that could be part of the problem. It could also be ich so I would try raising the temp and adding the salt and keep a close eye on him for the next couple of days. -Chelle IP: Logged |

In that pic the lips really don't look yellow to me. Could you get a better pic? Is it fuzzy or just a yellow color? The temperature changes probably did stress him out some and weakened his immune system. For now, I would just treat for ich and keep an eye on his mouth. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Hi cichlids small jaws, With regard to a malfunctioning heater: The increased temperature depletes the oxygen saturation in the water especially in the normally overcrowded tanks at a pet shop. When this happens the fish will start breathing rapidly to process oxygen from the water. The rapid breathing will actually cause damage to the gill plates. The fact that he seems to breathing normally now is a good sign that too much damage hasn't been done. I can't tell from your posts how long you have had him in a good environment, but every day that he makes it in your tank is a better sign of recovery. IP: Logged |

I'm cichlid small jaws' friend, and I was with him when he got this oscar, he's had him/her for between 1 and 2 weeks, I cant remember exactly when, he knows for sure. I cant make any real facts on his appearance and stuff, but I can say, from my perspective, the day before he had the midnight snack of firemouth, he was swimming around normally and stuff, then when I came over the next day, after he had the firemouth, we looked around the tank, and found him lying between some decorations just above the substrate, just like cichlid small jaws describes him, and all he's done since then that I've noticed, is move over into the pot he mentions IP: Logged |

quote: It could just be a bruise. I know my red/tiger oscar gets bruises when he bangs himself on decorations. They show up as spots that are a couple shades darker than his normal coloration. I've never my lutino get a bruise but I'm guessing that on a white fish it might show up as yellow. -Chelle IP: Logged |
