Hey, I was out today getting some more feeders and i saw that the fish place had gotten some electrib blue lobsters and they had 1 in thier pirana tank. So i asked and they said that at first the piranas tryed to bite it but the lobster just fought em off, now they leave em alone. So i got one myself and he looks like hes doin fine in the tank. Theres some places for him to hide. he looks sweet in my tank cause the gravel is almost the exact same blue as him and he just looks so cool. Does anybody else have one of these little electric blue lobsters in thier tanks? Also im assuming the lobster wont get too big, hes a couple inches long and im assuming he will stay like that. Thanks IP: Logged |

That's funny, I just bought one today. He's two inches and so good looking. I have a 96 wide tank with 3 alligator gars (non-true) 2 needlenose gars, a tiger shuvlenose and zebra shovelnose, one black ghost and an electric blue dempsy. They all came as babies and get along. The crayfish better grow a bit fast cause the tiger shovelnose will eat him if he gets much bigger than his cuurent 7 inches. They get 6-8 inches from what the store owner and material I read said. JKDSniper, You're playing with a loaded tank; Loaded with food that is. With a 7" Tiger Shovelnose, the 2" Electric Blue Lobster is just an apatizer. A Tiger Shovelnose can eat anything his size or smaller and in most cases, does. Lobsters and Crayfish are like a delicacy to Tigers. Tigers can get up to 4' in length and are avid eaters. From the list you gave the only ones with any longevity in that tank are the gar. IP: Logged |

I put a 2.5" crayfish in with my 6" Tiger Shovelnose. He waited until he was 10" and the crayfish was 3.5", then it was hors devors. Years ago my brother-in-law and I were watching his tank when all of a sudden his 4" Tiger snatched his 3.5" Lima. All we could do is roll on the floor laughing with disbelief that he ate the 3.5" Lima especially while both of us were right there next to the tank watching. IP: Logged |

I'm sorry to hear that you found the eating of your fish so funny. I would be upset if I knew one of my pets had died because I hadn't given him compatible tankmates. I imagine certain variables like hiding places etc. could give your lobster a better chance. IP: Logged |

katanas_edge, What we were laughing about was what appeared to be impossible happened. A fish that is predominately a night feeder would at 10:00am in a well lit tank completely swallow a fish basically the same size. Not only that we were both standing there with our noses nearly to the glass when he did it. Also my brother-in-law had in all the time he had the Tiger had never seen him eat because he waited until the lights were out in the tank. The only way he knew the Tiger was eating was the change in belly dimension. All these factors plus the irony that for the first time he got to see his Tiger eat, which he had been dieing to see ever since he bought the fish, it ate his second favorite fish. His number one favorite in that tank was the Tiger Shovelnose. We were both sick about it. I felt so bad for my brother-in-law that I was going to buy him another Lima but he didn't have another tank to put him in away from the Tiger. The Lima was exceptionable with a long trailing tail, more than any of the other Limas we had seen. What we laughed about was the irony of the situation. At the time all the information we had (from three different pet shops)and what we believed was that the fish were compatible. At the time neither fish was written on anywhere, including the the massive TFH looseleaf encyclopedia. No hiding place suitable for the Lima would have protected him from the Tiger Shovelnose because they were the same size. If you can't understand that then you have my sympathy. IP: Logged |

Canyon, Perhaps there is a reason foreign species of crayfish are illegal in St. John's. Be careful (and responsible) when importing foreign species, even if it's just on principle. IP: Logged |

I saw an electric blue lobster in my local pet store last weeekdn and was thinking of getting one. I wasn't sure of it's compatibility and care though. How is it working out for all of you who have one? I currently have 4 Comets, 2 Shebunkins and 4 small red crabs in my tank. The fish were originally outdoor pond fish that moved indoors for the winter. They ate my 4 snails, but don't seem to bother the crabs, who are admittedly better equipped for self defense.
