i have a 55 gallon tank and it is freshwater right now. i want to make it saltwater so i can have saltwater fish, how do i go about changing my freshwater to saltwater? do i just add that ocean salt at the pet stores in my tank and let it dissolve or something? please go through the steps on doing this so i can successfully keep saltwater fish in this tank. I would recommend a complete system breakdown, clean (no soap!), and restart. Saltwater tanks need coral sand as a substrate. All filter media will have to be replaced with new IF your filter is saltwater compatible (there can be no metal in the water flow stream). There can be no metal in or near enough to your tank to get wet. Salt water is very corrosive to metal and will leach toxins into your water. You may also need to buy a protein skimmer. If you going to invest in a saltwater setup, be prepared to spend more money and have less fish that need more attention, but they will be some smokin cool fish! Investing in more lighting will really bring out the vibrant colors of marine fish but be prepared to spend over $300.00 on the really high-end lights if you have a large tank. let me know how it goes...
