My BIL set up a 44 gallon tank for my kids and last week got some fish, he tested the water and everything was good to go. On Saturday I noticed the fish had ick, or so I thought, I called the fish store and he said to bring in a sample of the water and go from there. So I did and he gave me some ick medicine, it's day 3 and the fish still have white dots on how long till it's gone and he told he to do the medicine for 15 days....will my fish be cured or die? Needless to say, I'm a wreck, my kids goldfish are acting sick(see other post) and now the other fish.....dogs/cats are so much easier....he he!! Corinna IP: Logged |

Hello again, I don't know of any ick medication that should be used for 15 days. The recommended dosage for most is to treat for 5 days. If the symptoms remain do a water change and repeat dosage for 5 more days. Things that will help Ick meds work better: Gradually raise tank temperature to 80 degrees. Add 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt for every 5 or 10 gallons of water. I normally run 1 tbsp/10 gallons, but since you have a severe Ick infestation you most likely will want to run 1 tbsp/5 gallons. My fish got Ick in July. It took a long time for it to go away, but after I put the sick fish in a different tank, it finally went away! Good Luck! IP: Logged |
