REGARDING ICK: Ick is a parasite that is always present in the water in a dormant state. Ick becomes active from rapid temperature changes in the water, + or - 2 degrees in a twenty four hour period, or from bacterial overload. REMEDY: Maintain a ratio of Aquarium Salt of 1 tablespoon of salt per 10 gallons of water. NON-IODIZED ice cream rock salt is the same thing as Aquarium Salt and is much cheaper to use. The salt will also help keep down bacterial infections. USE A HEATER to maintain a constant temperature. TREATMENT: Clean gravel and filter to remove excess bacteria. Use a heater to maintain a constant temperature of 80 degrees. There are dozens of medications for Ick. My preference is the Mardel line product, Maracide. The reason for my preference is in case of a secondry bacterial infection I can use other Mardel products for the secondary infection with the Maracide without any adverse effects. Hope this helps you to understand cause and remedy of Ick. IP: Logged |
