hi there, i just set up my tank 3 days ago. i have a 14 gallon tank with the whole set up. the fish i put in it were: 2 guppies (male), 4 mollies (1male 3fem), 3 platies (2female 1 male), my one male betta (2 inches), and a pacu. my pacu is about 3 inches long and 2 inches high, he has a red/orange belly and no under bit (so not to be confused with a pirahna) today, i have 1 guppy, no betta and my male guppy us trying to mate with my platies. after 1 hour of being in the tank the pacu ate my betta. i woke up and couldnt find my guppy. what is going on. i have experience with fish. i was told these guys would be fine. now i am told by another guy they grow to 5 feet. someone please tell me the truth here. thanks ash IP: Logged |

Hey, I got a pacu when I bought a tank, and he is probably 7 inches long and 5 inches high. I have some goldfish with him, and he eats them sometimes at night. The bigger goldfish only have nipped fins, but Pacus are related to the pirahna, so should probably be treated as such... there's a lot of info on the web. IP: Logged |

I just bought 2 pacus last week. I put them in a 55 gal tank with 2 danios, 2 cory cats, 2 irridescent sharks, 2 pictus cats, 1 pleco, 1 bala shark, 2 plattys, 1 fruit tetra and 1 gourami. I have all my fish. My pacus are well fed, and have grown a bit since I brought them home. What are you feeding them? I found they like to chase and catch shrimp pellets. I feed mine at least 4 times per day. I have had no problems with the pacus messing with my other fish. Plus the littler fish have a few places to hide if needed. IP: Logged |

First of all, you should never start off a brand new tank fully loaded with fish! For a 14 gallon tank you should only be starting off with 2 maybe 3 small fish at the most. You need to let the nitrogen cycle complete before you throw too many fish into such a small tank. I'm sure half of your fish died from choking to death because the ammonia was too high. And when considering fish you should check compatibility before picking fish you think look good together. If you have any other guestions, you should ask the pet store where you buy the fish from. I'm hoping they would have someone there who should know about this. IP: Logged |
