Hi, I have a 4 month old Yorkshire Terrier. He is now allowed to go outside so I'm going to start teaching him to do that. I work from home, so I am here 95% of the time, which si the reason I have not gotten a crate as of yet. but now that I want to train him to go outside, I'm thinking a crate may be needed. Do you agree? If so, how do I use the crate? Does he sleep in it? When i am working, can he chill on his bed, or should i put him in the crate? thanks a lot IP: Logged |

The crate is for when you can't be watching him. You don't want to allow him the opportunity to make a mistake, so when you are sleeping or you can't watch him, he should be in the crate. When he is out of the crate, you should be watching for signs he has to go outside, as well as taking him out at the usual times - after eating, playing, drinking, or sleeping - and I would take him out every hour for a while as well. Go outside with him so you can praise him when he does his thing.

Hi, i agree with Jamiya. All 5 of my dogs have crates. They are the best things i have ever bought! Atleast i know when i am not around they are safe, and cant chew anything that would harm them Ozzy IP: Logged |

I have 2 yorkies and i dont' create them they have full run of the house but when we are home we leave the sliding glass door open for them to go out if they want and when i get home i usually go outside with them or in the garage with them so they can do what they need to do. We do have some accidents but that is because i'm gone 12 hours a day and the kids are gone 8 hours a day and they stay in the house. I need to buy a doggie door for them then find someone to install it for me PS Congrats on your puppy i love my to death they are little snuggle bugs and always have to be on my lap or next to me they are so cute both mine are 1 year [This message has been edited by Rene (edited 02-25-2004).] IP: Logged |
