3 month old doxie puppy, just got his last shot and the vet's okay to go outside (i live in the city), but he is scared out of his mind every time i put him down. he starts wimpering and crying and barely even sniffing around. he will not pee or poop outside. i've tried taking him out at the "right" time, and when he doesn't go, putting him right into his crate for 10 minutes, then going out again, etc. but it doesn't work. i did this for about an hour straight, then gave up, and literally the second i brought him in and took off the collar, he went to his pad and peed and pooped. how can i get him to be comfortable outside? You could try taking his pad outside, so that it would be familiar. Some puppies also get used to going on certain surfaces, so maybe 'wean' him of the pad. Take him out there with the pad a few times, and let him go on the pad, and then try it without the pad. Hope that helps! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Good advice. Perhaps taking him outside and staying for longer periods of time will help as well. Don't leave him, but go on about your buisness outside as usual (lawn work, relaxation, whatever) and let him roam around and check things out. Do NOt cater to his every whine, or cry. Act as if your ignoring him. But pay close attention. He seems to be spoiled and you need to break him of that. IP: Logged |

I think tutti has the good advice! To expand on what sam said.. definitely don't cater to your dogs every whine or cry.. if you coddle him and say "it's ok" it is reassuring them that there is really something to be upset about. It sounds mean, but if Max is whining over something when there is no apparent danger, I get stern with him and say No! Quiet! IP: Logged |

i don't cater to his cries at all --- i'm probably even meaner than you are about that kind of stuff. but still, he cries the whole time, so he doesn't do his business. i've tried the pad thing outside, but it doesn't work. first off, it's freezing here, so it blows all over the place. second, i live in new york city where there's stuff all over the place. i've also tried staying outside for long periods, but again, it's freezing (and he starts to noticably shiver!) and he just gets more freaked out, crying etc. i've tried to just carry him around with me outside a little so he gets used to the big bad city, but it's not really seeming to take! is this just a matter of persistence??? i'm afraid that if i do that then he won't get it that we're going outside to go to the bathroom! plus, did i mention it's freezing here?!?! As far as the housebreaking problem goes, you said you tried it for an hour. Why did you stop? It may be a matter of getting him to go that first time outside, and after that it might get easier. Are you sitting outside that whole time with his crate outside? Because that shouldn't be necessary, especially if it is freezing outside! Try this one - take him out. If he doesn't go, bring him inside and put him in his crate. Repeat in 10 minutes. Keep going until he finally goes. And make sure the crate isn't too big! I know doxies can be very hard to train. Hopefully some doxie owners will chime in.

HE probably doesn't like the cold! get him a sweater and retry like jamiya said. IP: Logged |
